Even with the light weight of a VW, their engines were way underpowered. Unless you think a 20-30 second 0-60 mph time (depending on the year) "powerful." They were slow even with 4-series gearing (axle ratio). Imagine how much slower they would be if they had highway gearing (like 2.93s or 2.76s)!

BTW, chrome is definitely not useless... plastic is! Chrome looks great and is fun to polish. Beats those plastic bumpers of modern cars any day!

VW was not the best engine ever but for it's time period 1937 25 HP was a moving thing. Then the jump to 36HP (1100cc) was made for a while and then in 1961 came the 1200cc with a 40HP. The early/mid 30's had a crashbox tranny that was updated to a full synchro in 1961. These minor changes helped the evolution of VW thru the yrs. When considering the car weight...the small engines served their purpose.

If I sound like a VW nut...I am a former VW mechanic/engine builder of 28 yrs.

Steve

I've been collecting car magazines for almost 35 years and I know how slow the '50s to '70s VW Beetles are.
They average around low-20s for 0-60 mph.

Not ignorance, just facts.
