No, what made you think that? When my family came in to the US they came in through the Northeast and many are there to this day. In fact, a guy like me blends in well in the Northeast (I'm Southern European).

Clinging?!! Man, Baltimore and Philly are similar is so many ways. I don't know what you people aren't seeing, because I see it, and feel it. Especially with the Black people.

I don't understand ya'll! You act like Baltimore is like unto an island all to itself and the city hasn't been influenced by other surrounding cities. People act like Baltimore is some island in the middle of nowhere, not knowing that it's positioned on the I-95 corridor where you have tons of transients passing and moving the city, leaving their cultural and linguistic nuances. Gee-z-whiz! Do you want Baltimore to stay backwards for ever?

You are more than welcome to post videos, links, pics etc to support your experience/claim that "Baltimore and Philly Similar is so many ways".

I speak from years and years of going down to Baltimore/DC visiting friends who lived in either Baltimore or the suburbs of DC in Maryland (who went to Morgan and kinda lingered in Baltimore/Maryland after graduating) experiencing the vibe and culture. I'm sorry, but it's just not the same pulse/culture you feel up here. But that's not a bad thing, Baltimore is its own town and it shouldn't have to be like cities that are much larger/diverse to the North. I just find it sad that a lot of Baltimore posters on this site always have this "I wanna be down" complex with wanting to be considered Northeastern or as Bajan once put it "Schlong riding" on Philly specifically.

And no, I'd never want Baltimore to stay "backwards forever". Baltimore will thrive one day, and we'll all have beer and fish or whatever the traditions are down there.

Maryland still has a higher Italian percentage than any Southern state except for Florida(which is largely due to so many transplants from the Northeast).

Baltimore MSA is less than a 2% difference than the Chicago MSA. Nobody question's Chicago's Italian influence but when it's Baltimore you want to make a big fuss. Whether you like it or not, Italian Americans are well represented in the Baltimore area so get over it.

When you look at Baltimore has a whole, it has more in common with Philly than it does with cities like Charlotte, Atlanta, and Houston. Anyone who has been to any of those cities can clearly see the difference.

Baltimore is like a smaller Philly.

Of course Philly and Baltimore have their differences but when people say that those cities don't have similarities, it's stretching the truth.

It also has a lower percentage than all of the Northeastern states and some of the Midwestern states. It's as close to Louisiana in this regard as it is to Maine and is substantially lower than Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York. Maryland's percentage is also much higher due to transplants from the Northeast, particularly the rapid growth in the DC area.

Midwestern cities--Chicago included--are not very Italian; German and Polish ancestry are much more prevalent in the cities of the Upper Midwest. In terms of its White ethnic makeup, Baltimore fits the profile of a Midwestern city like Detroit more than it does a Northeastern city like Philadelphia or New York. I think the numbers pretty much make this assertion incontrovertible.

The Baltimore metro is 6.5% Italian. That's a lower percentage than New Orleans. There are no non-Northeastern cities that have a higher Italian or White ethnic % than Philadelphia.

For example, here is a more detailed demographic breakdown (moving from the top of the Mid-Atlantic to the bottom).

New York - 32.26% of MSA (66.94% of non-Hispanic Whites)
Philadelphia - 33.03% of MSA (51.26% of non-Hispanic Whites)
Baltimore - 19.98% of MSA (33.78% of non-Hispanic Whites)
Washington - 14.25% of MSA (30.42% of NHW population)
Hampton Roads - 13.25% of MSA (23.16% of non-Hispanic Whites)
Richmond - 12.07% of MSA (20.07% of non-Hispanic Whites)

Baltimore is clearly closer to the cities of the Upland South than it is to the coastal Mid-Atlantic cities to its north. 20 is closer to 13 than it is to 33, no? I'm not sure why people continue to say Baltimore is more similar to Philly or NYC in this regard when the numbers say otherwise.

I'm also not sure why you continue to use Deep South Coastal cities as a benchmark of southerness. Baltimore was the Upper South, which is considerably different from the Lower South. If you haven't noticed, there are no southern cities (outside of Virginia, that is) that look like Richmond either.
