Yep. Post Census data, historical Census data, excerpts from books, articles and interviews. You know, that kind of stuff.

You do the same thing on the regular too: "Great post +2."

I see Baltimore listed there.

Nope, not here. Sorry, but here on city-data.com, we should treat Baltimore as a Southern City since the main site classifies it as such, even if it has considerable Northeastern influences (which it definitely has, much like how Louisville has considerable Midwestern influences and El Paso has numerous Western influences). But if you like a mix of the best of what both the South and the Northeast have to offer IMO, Baltimore is right for you since its just 30 miles from the official divide between regions, and just like day vs. night, Baltimore finds itself in the twilight zone. This may not be a clear as say 50 years ago with much more national/global influences, but it still classicly applies. As others have pointed out just because a city is cosmopolitan, diverse, and has a good economy doesn't mean it isn't southern. Look at Dallas, Charlotte, Atlanta, and Nashville for example. Yes, they may not have rowhouse architecture (one of Baltimore's northern influences), but have the same genteel pace of life, fairly mild climate, an intolerant history towards minorities, and certain linguistic traits.
+2 Way to go! Alright!!! Excellent analysis! +9 Post of 2014!

Exactly. Especially coming from a person who knows very little about Baltimore.

Well if that's the case, why are some of you making the case that Baltimore is Northeastern since regional culture knows no boundaries??

Because northern culture extends far beyond the Mason-Dixon Line and is much stronger than southern culture extending north beyond of the Mason-Dixon Line. That's why Baltimore and Washington DC are considered northern cities by many people. If southern influence was strong beyond the Mason-Dixon Line than cities like Philadelphia and New York City would be considered southern cities in culture.

Washington DC and Baltimore are both mid-atlantic and northern, just like Philadelphia and New York City.

+2 Exactly. You get the same vibes in Delaware and South Jersey (which extends pass the Mason-Dixon Line btw, guess we should include New Jersey as a border state too ) as well.

As well as Ohio, Indiana and Illinois, since all of them extends south of the Mason-Dixon Line.
