Oakland moved to within 3.5 games of the # 1 wild card slot by taking the first of three from the Yankees 6-3. Cahill made a decent start, five innings, three runs, and five relievers pitched no hit ball the rest of the way. Chubby Chucker Sabathia gave up five runs in 3.1 innings for New York.

The A's would be in first place in four of the six ML divisions, as would the Yankees.

A's vaunted bullpen taking a pounding Tuesday night vs. the Yankees.

Coming in to protect a slim 1-0 A's lead despite the A's recording only a single hit up to that point (Piscotty's homer in the first), Familia walked in the tying run with a bases loaded walk in the 7th, Rodney gave up 2 runs in the 8th, and than Emilio Pagan has so far allowed 2 runs here in the 9th with the Yankees still batting.

The A's bounced back to take the series from New York with an easy 8-2 win. Yanks catcher Gary Sanchez was like a stealth player for Oakland tonight, he had a horrible first inning, two passed balls and a wild pitch in the dirt that he waved at but failed to move his body to block, and another wild pitch which was actually a wild pitch. When the dust settled it was 4-0 and the A's never looked back. They move back to 3.5 games behind NY for the # 1 wild card.

The Astros and Mariners won as well, so there is no other change in the standings.

Sanchez defense behind the plate is a big reason why, IMO, they are going to take a serious look at moving him in the winter, and a change of scenery could help him too. Team to watch is the Nationals as they have a need at C, and the Nationals have something the Yankees need: a top flight ace starting pitcher.

Hypothetically speaking which team says no first to a Sanchez Max Scherzer swap?? I’m thinking Nats. Even at his age, his work load, and his contract, he’d be the ace for the Yankees and will pitch them deep into games.

Sanchez had that sensational debut, but his game seems to have dwindled in the following seasons and right now he looks lost out there. Trading for him would be a gamble, but not a terribly expensive one. He has one more year on the cheap, then he becomes arbitration eligible in 2020, and a free agent in 2023. A team with a hole at firstbase might consider acquiring Sanchez and moving him to the least demanding defensive post. I don't see him continuing as a catcher much longer and the theory would be that relieved of his plate chores, he could concentrate on his bat and return to his earlier form.

I don't know what the Nationals' economics are at the moment, but that would be the only reason to consider trading Scherzer. He is under contract for three more seasons after this year and gets compensated at 42.4 million a season. Any team taking him on would have to A) Be able to afford to pay one player 42 million bucks and B) Not have it shove them over the tax penalty line.

The money aside, Scherzer is an astonishingly valuable player. He needs just seven more innings for this to be the sixth year in a row he has made every start and thrown 200 or more innings. Since 2009 he has never made fewer than 30 starts. And oh, throw in that he has won the last two NL Cy Young awards and led the league in strikeouts both times, this is a superstar actually earning his immense salary. He is leading the NL in Ks at the moment and has a 2.28 ERA. I think I would want a lot more than Gary Sanchez in a trade.

Ramon Laureano parked a couple of home runs and the A's used a pitching by committee plan to mask the weakness of the "starter" Liam Hendricks who only was asked to pitch the first. This he did scorelessly, followed by six Oakland relievers as the A's prevailed 8-4 over the Rangers.

The Mariners fell to the Yankees 4-0, so Oakland remains 3.5 games behind NY for the # 1 wild card, and 6.5 games ahead of Seattle for the second slot.

Laureano is batting .309/.387/.568 to go along with his sensational glovework in center.

Mariners are fading fast. Couldn't sustain the 1-run magic. Yanks are getting healthy again.

Mark Chapman had a pair of doubles and Kris Davis hit his ML leading 41st home run as the A's won a see saw game against the Rangers,

The A's struck first with 2 in first frame, Texas went ahead 4-2 in the 4th, Oakland tied it in the 5th, went ahead 5-4 in the 6th, made it 6-4 in the 7th, the Rangers tied it with 2 in the top of the 8th and Oakland recaptured the lead with two in the bottom of the inning. Treinen then ended it with a 1-2-3 ninth.

That is 5 of their last 6. The Astros are still playing, the Mariners and Yankees haven't started yet.

If Kris Davis can manage three more home runs before the season ends he will have increased his home run total every year he has been in the majors.
It has gone:
11
22
27
43
43
41 and counting.

Despite a shaky start from Trevor Cahill, the A's completed a sweep of the Rangers with a 7-3 win at the Coliseum. Texas jumped off to a 3-0 lead off Cahill, but after he was removed in the third, seven Oakland relievers were untouched the rest of the way.

The A's really leaned on their bullpen in this series, relievers made 20 appearances in the three games. The Mariners beat NY to avoid a sweep, so the A's remain 7.5 games ahead of them, 2.5 games behind NY for the first wild card, and gained a half game on the Astros who play tonight.

Default 87-57

30 games above .500 for the first time since the end of the 2013 season when they finished 96-66. Won 2 of 3 against the Yankees, and swept the Rangers, so now the WC lead on the Mariners balloons to 7.5, and the deficit in both the division and for WC number 1 is down to 2.5. Off day on Monday before an East Coast swing (but at least normal times for me ) with 3 in Baltimore beginning on Tuesday, and than 3 at the Orange juice carton down in St. Pete against the Rays on Friday.
