John Lackey and Matt Carpenter have not done well for the Cardinals recently. Lackey allowed ten runs in the 11-3 loss against the Rockies Monday. Carpenter followed up by striking out in each of his four at-bats in the 4-3 loss against the Rockies Tuesday.

The Cardinals continue to find ways to win despite injuries which shows the depth and heart of this team. They will be a force for the entire season and still arguably have one of the best pitching staffs in all of baseball. Their run differential of +69 is extremely impressive and they have a stingy defense only allowing 181 runs against through 63 games. Nobody is really close to that number.

Can you say "sustainable winner" here? They've got the best record now, but don't be surprised if these guys keep up that best record by season's end.

Too bad about all the injury issues. Would have enjoyed first team to 60 wins before any other team can sniff 50.

I'm sure that Cards fans will still take this, however. Still a very good year when you win 50 of your first 74. The Cubs and Pirates will never catch up to them.

Now approaching August 1st, and the Cardinals just keep humming along. Their +106 run differential is still tops in the majors and they have had only 300 runs scored against them which is also best in the majors. The Cardinals have a unique way of winning even in times of injuries. They are resilient and know how to keep winning.

Let's now just see if they can keep up that resilience. Only 4 1/2 games separate the Cards from the Pirates, and just 7 1/2 with the Cubs. This has been a scary division this year with the three best records in the NL.

The Padres had been the Pirates bugaboo for 14 years until this season. Glad to see they're now the Cards' problem - the only NL team with a season series win over StL. That's baseball.

After yesterday's shutout, the Cardinals should have several bench warmers in the clubhouse.
