looking at the cav schedule and available tickets on espn, tuesday at bucks, 1192 tickets avail starting at $34.
at detroit, 1785 starting at $62
at charlotte, 2688 starting at 62

now looking at the bucks other home schedule (for comparative purposes)
home vs washington 1015 at $22
vs okc 561 @ $22
vs NYK 1061 @ $22

seems more people are buying tickets to see westbrook than lebron?

detroit the tickets are give or take about 100 available, similar to the cavs numbers

hell the hornets are selling more tickets to see the lakers than the cavs (880 available to 2688)
bulls 1191
miami 2 days before cleveland, 1272 available to the cavs 2686 available.

are people just afraid they will catch a game with the cavs resting players? or are they just not buying tickets to see the champs for another reason?

I doubt it, probably other reasons, maybe people just don't have time to sneak in a basketball game right before Christmas.

yet throughout their entire schedule, with the exception of a game here or there, the away games are all about the same. between 1000-3000 still available.
granted later in the season im sure more will sell, but the running theme is theyre not selling out games because its lebron. there are not masses of people flocking to go watch the cavs in other cities as you would think with all this outrage over some resting players.

are there butt hurt fans here and there because the cavs/spurs/warriors/clippers who ever rested players, clearly (they seem to all be on this board) but by and large, that is just not the case.

i stick to the fact that, by resting players from time to time, you ease wear on them, thus prolonging their careers/productivity which is a good thing. rest them every now and then to extend their shelf life or drive them into the ground on the grind and we all miss out on potentially seeing them in more games at a higher level.

the case of kobe and duncan are pretty good, the last few years of Kobes career were terrible, bad teams, and a star that couldnt do what he used to be able to do and was riddled with injuries, clearly due to the extensive wear on his body from long seasons early on. duncan on the other side, rested regularly, had his minutes monitored the last 5-8 years of his career (or more) (didnt average more than 34 minutes since 2005, not more than 30 since 2010) and played at a very high level with great efficiency until his last season at 40 years old.
ill take a high level duncan for 60-75 games a year and 30 mpg until hes 40 over wearing him out playing 35-40 mpg, 75+ until hes 35, then retiring or playing 5 more years riding the bench or clawing at staying healthy and/or unproductive.
the last 3 years of kobes career were not good, and luckily he wasnt so prideful that he continued on. he was injured and played a total of 107 games from 35-37. for 14 seasons of his career he averaged nearly 40mpg and played a LOT of games. rest could have given him those last 3 seasons in front of the fans.

duncan on the other hand at 35-37 was actually playing on a more efficient level than he was from ages 31-33. on a per 36 min basis his numbers were nearly identical his entire career until age 39-40.
in the 2000 playoffs, pop sat him, he hurt his knee but could have played. pop sat him with the "precaution" to make sure as to not shorten his shelf life. i for one thank him for that.

I don't think it's an outrage, it happens occasionally. I also think the ticket price is more important than attendance. Not everyone in a city is going to go to a game, but maybe a few Cleveland fans in Utah, Memphis, Phoenix, etc. who want to attend one game a year. If they go, say, with their significant other, and spend $200/ticket, for a $500 night out, that's a lot of money. If you find out the day of, with no time to sell your tickets, that Lebron isn't making the trip, it's very fair to get pissed off.

Lower level midcourt seats for CLE @ UTAH going for about $350 (with fees) on Stubhub. The same seats for TOR @ UTAH going for about $150+. Toronto is a good team, mind you.

No one is disputing that resting players creates long-term advantages. If there are 1000 empty seats, who cares when the other 19000 seats are selling for over twice as much?

If it happened for a national game, it would've been interesting to see Silver's reaction. Stern would've levied them a fine.

Because he's paid by the Spurs organization, so he should care more about what benefits the Spurs organization in the long run (i.e winning championships) than what the NBA cares about.

Well in the Spurs case they never had any players that were considered Flashy just a bunch of good players who played well as a team and won titles. People was not eager to see Tim Duncan if the spurs were visiting a certain team's arena because he wasn't that type of player. Lebron on the otherhand is the face of the NBA and has a lot of fans all over the country and people love seeing him play so for him to not play was probably a disappointment to a lot of fans.

spoken like a fan of individuals and not the game, fair weather fan in the making.

while its not a perfect metric, lets look at available tickets for the next 5 away game for the "not flashy spurs" vs the "face of the nba"

the cavs have
bucks, pistons, hornets, nets and suns as their next 5 road games
the spurs have
rockets, clippers, blazers, hawks and nuggets as their next 5
the cavs average 1606 available seats on espn
the spurs average 893 available seats.
it would seem the people are coming out to watch the not flashy spurs pretty regularly, even with the all time great tim duncan gone.

This is just stupid. The Spurs are playing much better teams.
