Does anyone have any additional information about the story of the pickup truck falling into a sink hole in Paauilo Mauka on the Big Island?

What do you want to know about it? Vera's okay, her truck isn't, the hole was there for a week (and even bigger than the original picture), it's been fixed now (they put another big metal culvert pipe in) and I think the rental car that was stuck on the wrong side of the hole has made it back home by now, too. Although they had to pay for more rental days.

It was actually more of a washout than a sink hole. There had been a huge metal culvert pipe which had either end held in with cement. It looked like the pipe rusted or had some sort of hole that allowed the water to wash the riprap out from above the pipe but below the asphalt of the road.

From what I've heard, Vera's husband drove over the roadway immediately before she did (they were in two different cars). Her truck fell into the hole and he didn't even notice she wasn't behind him for awhile. The road is very twisty right there, but he should have noticed within a couple miles. She got out with a ladder. They had to make the hole bigger to get the truck out.

What, did you lose the thread already in progress on this story? It's on the main Hawai'i Forum:

Reading it on my phone I didn't realize you were linking to the original thread, which is all I was trying to do. Seemed like the OP didn't realize there was already a thread in progress on this exact topic, but on the main forum.

Oh well. Maybe it's time for me to upgrade to a phone with a larger screen?

I checked for previous posts about the story in the Big Island section because the event occurred on the Big Island. I don't check the main section as often as the individual island sections because the main section seems to be pretty static compared to the activity in the individual island sections. Maybe I need to check the main section more often.

On the main section, they have a nifty button that says "See merged threads from all islands" which makes it handy to keep track of all of them. Although, once you go to a thread, you pretty much have to hit the "back" button or you'll stay on that island's threads.
