I'm trying to move from Hilo to Southern CA in the middle of November. I have maybe a pallet of belongings (if that). No furniture, just small things. What is the best way to ship? Rent a corner of someone's container? USPS? Any other ideas? Mahalo Nui!

If they fit, US Postal Service flat rate shipping boxes. UPS and FedEx are way too expensive.

Actually, it IS worth checking out both UPS and FedEx Ground.

There is a huge difference in price between shipping on these carriers to the mainland versus from the mainland. Often in the last several years, FedEx or UPS has been significantly cheaper than Priority Mail (for stuff that you don't want to ship Parcel Post and wait 6 weeks).

I don't know why this is, but it does come as an understandable surprise to those who are new to the islands. It certainly did to me years ago.

A friend of mine moved their entire household from Maui to southern California via FedEx and it was cheaper than any alternative -- and you get solid tracking info and insurance too.

Containers, ships and aircraft travel from Hawaii to the mainland with massive vacant space in cargo. No ships travel from the mainland to Hawaii with empty non-revenue containers. But, they may have as much as 75% of the containers from Hawaii back to the mainland empty. Any freight eastbound is welcome so the rates are lower to attract shipments.
