I Love Barbara Kingsolver. Another author that always comes to mind when I think of Kingsolver is Alice Hoffman (Turtle Moon) because both have a poetic, mystical, magical quality.
1. The Bible (No, I'm not kidding.)
2. The Bible (No, I'm not kidding.)
3. The Bible (I'm still not kidding.)
4. The Practice of the Presence of God by Brother Lawrence.
5. Joshua by Joseph Girzone.
I have to stay away from this thread. It frustrates me to no end. I just don't seem to be able to think in terms of 5 best books I've read.
I see titles here, and agree, wholeheartedly, they are wonderful, superb, brilliant, but the best -- like in the best of the best? the best-est ever? There are so many titles out there that I've yet to read. How can I possibly say these five?
See my dilemma?
Let me introduce myself. My husband has begun calling me Mrs. Monk.
Don't worry about it. I started this thread, and I've added many more than 5! I would like to edit the thread to read " What are your 25 favorite books?" But, you can't edit the thread title. At least, I can't. It's funny, I only see an edit button on this last post.
Well, Jess5, I have the magic finger and could change the title for you, if you wish.

I don't know "best" books but these are my 5 Favorite Nonfiction books (as of right now) in no particular order:
1. The Hot Zone - Richard Preston
2. Firehouse - David Halberstam
3. The Great Deluge - Douglas Brinkley
4. Bias - Bernard Goldberg
5. American Jihad - Steven Emerson
and my most recent nonfiction favorite:
Desperate Passage: The Donner Party's Perilous Journey West - Ethan Rarick
These are my 5 favorite classics:
1. Red Badge of Courage
2. Lord of The Flies
3. Darkness at Noon
4. Farenheit 451
5. Stranger In A Strange Land
These are the ones that come to mind, in no particular order:
The Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollan (scary in a good way) Hyperion and The Fall of Hyperion by Dan Simmons (really one book split into two due to length) The Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins (this book alone initiated a cascade of worldview changes for me!) Amusing Ourselves to Death by Neil Postman (Jerry Mander's Four Arguments..., which someone else mentioned, was excellent as well.) Ultramarathon Man by Dean Karnazes (very inspiring!)
"A Walk in the Woods" By Bill Bryson "The Lost Continent" By Bill Bryson "Brians Winter" By Gary Paulsen "The Wisconsin River" by Nels Ackerlund "The Island" By Gary Paulsen
Have you noticed a pattern? I love outdoor adventure books! Let me know if you have any recommendations.
Little Women by Louisa May Alcott
Emma by Jane Austen
A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens
Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand
The Lost Continent by Bill Bryson
Also- The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien
