Why not live in one of the many various predominately white communities in the Boston Metro area? You may not realize this, but your preference to live in a Black or Latino community in Boston only perpetuates the racial segration the city is widley known for. The Boston metro is one of the most racially/culturally segregated modern cities in the United States. It never ceases to amaze me how people can identify commuites/towns by ethnticities....Wow!!

seldomseen,

I am a white guy and I would never live in a Boston white neighborhood. Either they are racist thugs (Southie or parts of Dorchester), or they are filled with spoiled college kids and recovering hippies (Cambridge, Jamaica Plain, etc). I have always found that the coolest neighborhoods of the Boston area are the ones with the most diversity of racial and ethnic groups living together - same thing in NYC.

Eastie is definitely a great place for the original poster because of its location next to the airport and diverse community. You can easily find a decent studio or 1 bedroom for $800 - $900 here.

Default Jamaica Plain would be great

I think the orginal poster may find Jamaica Plain a nice place to live. It is very diverse. It is also on the orange line so one can easily get to work.

Default Hi Dakanise: I'd appreciate your help for a story I'm writing.

I went to Boston U decades ago and was last in Boston around 2002. I need to describe a section of Roxbury for a story I'm writing (fiction). When I was last there I checked some rental units near Dudley station. One was a small apartment building and, next to it, a duplex that was being renovated. I think the street was near Moreland. In any case, the renovation was very upscale. (The rent was steep: 2 bedrooms for $1200.) I'm wondering about the mix of housing in that area now--six years later. Your post mentioned that blocks with mostly private homes are pretty stable and relatively safe. Can you tell me some streets in Roxbury you consider safe and attractive--particularly blocks with single family homes. (And does the area around Moreland Street ring a bell?)

Thanks.

What a strange board this is. One thread chastises Boston for it's racism while in another thread everyone is bending over backwards to help a black man "live with his own kind".

South Dorchester in the Ashmont area is safe and has access to the Red Line subway. Oh, and plenty of blacks.

there's nothing wrong w/ wanting to live w/in your own demographic, especially when moving to a new city or state. some blacks/whites/Asians/Latinos/students/families/elderly want to live around other blacks/whites/Asians/Latinos/students/families/elderly. so long as your reasons for living in these areas are positive (ie, wanting to live in a close-knit PR community for example) and not negative (ie, not wanting to live around blacks b/c they're poor/ghetto, etc), and that person remains open minded to the world outside their community, I see no harm in this

BS!
If I came on this board and requested info on the white areas because that was where I chose to live, I would be tarred and feathered.
The hypocrisy on this board makes me sick!
Maybe we should experiment. Maybe I should start a thread just like this one except replace black with white and we would see what happens. Do you want to have a pool to see how quickly it would be deleted by the moderator? Do you want to rate the vitriol of the responses as they come in?

I totally agree. This double standard crap is unreal. And do you know who would be the first to tar and feather you? White, cowards. These individuals need to be dealt with in the harshest possible manor. I dont think most other non-whites would say much about it and the ones who would, well who reallty cares? Its prety normal human behaviour for a person to want to live around their own kind. But the white cowards, whom I spoke of earlier (you know who they are) would call that raceist with no valid points to back it up, only their malalignment, ill-will and damaging intent...

S.O.N.
