I was reading the story of the "Missing Girl," in the Charlotte, NC forum, and someone stated that Niagara Falls is a ghetto. Is this true? Is this where the tourists go, when they are visiting the falls? Thank you
Almost nothing to do in Niagara Falls NY as a tourist other then the Casino and the Falls themselves
Niagara Falls Ontario is thriving with endless options for tourists
It depends like any city of decent size. They have some nice neighborhoods and it has it's share of rough neighborhoods.
As for touristy things to do, most of it is on the Canadian side. I've heard that Candians look at their Niagara Falls in a similar way in terms of being blue-collar with some relatively rough neighborhoods as well. On the NY side, you do have the aquarium, the Maid of the Mist, the Outlet Mall, the casino, a couple of restaurants and maybe some small museums.
There are many areas in the city of niagara falls that could be called ghetto's. Although these areas are close to the physical location of niagara falls, most tourists won't come in contact with it, unless they wander residential areas during their trip.
The area near the falls on the New York side is a state park, and a few attractions. This area has been economically depressed all my life (i'm 28 years old). It is slowly getting better, and you can see some progress.
The Canadian side is nicer yes, but not by a TON anymore. Both sides have a Casino now.
Johnny, do yourself a favor, go to the website of 103.3 The Edge, and listen online on Mondays right around 5pm. The dj's read off some of the more interesting stories that come of out the Niagara Falls police blotter. That will give you a good idea on what the american side is all about

Considering that it is a tourist town, you will get your share of some crimes. Myrtle Beach, Atlantic City

Considering that it is a tourist town, you will get your share of some crimes. Myrtle Beach, Atlantic City, Vegas, VA Beach and others get their share of crime due to the amount of tourism in those communities.
Lewiston and Old Fort Niagara, as well as the Canadian Niagara-on-the-Lake are worth seeing.
If you just want to see the Falls as natural beauty, the park on the American side is wonderful. The casino on the US side is fine. Downtown Niagara Falls is not much.
If you want tourist traps, then you want Canada. The edge of the Falls by Table Rock House and is incredibly impressive (you are only a few feet away). You can go behind the Falls. You can ( in season) do the Maid of the Mist boat... the rest is tourist trap.
BTW, if going to Canada, bring your passport; you need some proof of citizenship
