Uh, no. That's why they hire more managers and sub-managerial people. All of them earning higher salaries. A person can only work so much in a week. If they were working 120 hrs/week instead of 60, your logic would make sense. But I doubt that is the case.

There is a ton of barriers to entry for firemen and policemen here in CA (i.e. knowing somebody on the inside helps a lot). They are slashing their workforce but keeping the high salaries for the few select who get to stay. It is atrocious because they don't want to pay people a bit less so more people can have jobs. Basically the current force is reduced, so they can get more "overtime". They get paid more for overtime. Maybe it saves the department money in the long run because of the reduced personnel upkeep. But I think it leads to substandard work. And I do think their salaries are grossly out of line for what they do... in my opinion, most of them really don't achieve much, unless they are out in the field doing dangerous work. They come and take your report but don't bother solving the crime even if you have all the necessarily information (i.e. suspect's phone #, address). They mainly respond to potentially violent crimes but anything else like theft... or the time a van of Hispanics tried to run me over... forget about it.

I think a cop should weigh in here and explain the system so if I'm mistaken about this I can be corrected. I think earning 150k/year at a higher level duty is fine with overtime as long as there is no pension. With pension, it is just way too much, and completely unsustainable. They should have some lump sum compensation for the family of a cop in case of death or injury. But pension? Why?

Nothing is going to change. The cops & firemen will continue to receive high salaries, benefits, pensions & perks & the oakland police dept will continue to kill innocent animals...UGH!!!!

I expected a little more. If you're making $225,000 as an Oakland Cop shooting family pets, at least take out someone's tiger, or a lion, or a liger.

Why is it a problem? The general public despises free markets. Loan mods, tarp fund bailouts, FHA financing, 1st time home buyer credits...

The average U.S citizen is a closet socialist.

I do. But there is a matter of figuring how "high" those salaries & benefits should get. I know with retirement benefits we have gone over the top for some people, but not all. Not even most. They gamed the system and there was nobody there to put on the breaks so who get's the blame for that?

IMO the things I wan't to see fully and generously funded are public safety, education, and transportation. And if you look at someones salary and think "thats way too much money" then just go do the job and reap the rewards yourself. Most people won't do that becasue it's too hard and the jobs but you at risk.

They're parasites.

$10/hr. is too much. I'd agree to $11/hr. if they weren't allowed to wear the gun and taser.
