You'd be surprised how much prices drop when you get into properties that are not served by pavement. There are still many dirt and gravel roads in the Bay Area hinterlands. There are even a few places with no road at all, you have to park at the end of a dirt road then hike or pack animal it in.

LOL!

Back in my reckless youth, me and some friends used to backpack near there, also, up north of there out east of Paradise. We would go cross country through land owned by logging companies and other non public owners. Never got shot at, but realistically, the population density is so low, you rarely see anyone unless you go looking for settlements.

So...........if you read all these comments and try to surmise thus far. It is pretty clear that Butte County is the most hillbilly/redneck place in California.
Would most agree? I think so.
Hard to believe that those people are as much as Californians as a surfer from the OC, hippys in Humboldt, artist in SF, and tanned blondes from LA.
California is truly another planet within itself.
Gotta love it!

AND ..........if anyone is interested in seeing how wealthy rednecks live check out these tacky "mansions"

I, many moons ago, lived in an old goldminers shack above the West Branch of the Feather River north of Concow, east of Paradise. I was going to school on the GI bill.
This was back when people could actually afford a Pendleton shirt.
I got my water from a ditch that we diverted off a creek
Heated with an old Pot Belly wood stove
Cooked on a Coleman Stove,
Took showers in a shower house we built into the side of the hill, we would fill the hot water heater with a bucket from the ditch, light the heater, wait 40 minutes. 35 minutes, cool shower, 45 minutes too hot. Run from the house starkers to the shower, take the shower, then run starkers back to the cabin and the roaring wood stove.
We had an outhouse with a great view out the doorless entry.
Had what was termed "an old lady"

and of course the de rigueur 52 Chevy pickup truck.

We were, hillbillys and pretty happy about the whole thing.

There are similar towns in the North State. They would be a shock to the system for most Southern Californians. The North State, and its residents, are quite a bit different than urban California residents, almost as if it really were another state.
Someone beat me to it - I must be a hick at heart, though, since poverty notwithstanding, I rather like the area.

How about the Zzyzx Rd. off-ramp from the 15 between Barstow and Las Vegas? Is there even a town there?
