He lists MT as his location. Perhaps he should change it to LA to reflect the truth of the matter.

Yeah, he lists MT as location. Maybe next screen name incarnation he'll list Tasmania

Pick anything in the Gold Country for starters. I have a job, as does my wife. As do all of my nonretired friends.

During the past ten years I have personally been stuck in horrendous traffic in St. Louis, Baton Rouge, Washington DC, and Atlanta. In almost all major cities, the traffic at rush hour becomes stop-and-go, even if one would not describe it as "horrendous".

Now having said that, the reason I am not tempted to leave Los Angeles has not been mentioned in this thread yet. And that is the world-class culture: The Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Los Angeles Opera, the Los Angeles Master Chorale, the many, many museums (not limited to art museums), the large number of art house movie theatres, live theatre, the many, many genuine ethnic restaurants, the lectures by noted authors, and so on.

Yes, other smaller cities have their symphony orchestras, their museums, etc. But it just isn't the same.

I am 70 and retired; one big advantage of that is that I can largely (although not entirely) pick and choose what times of day and what days of the week I will go to various things.

Perhaps only a small percentage of the population shares my interests, and that is fine. But L.A. is a wonderful place.

(A side note: Why is it that a discussion of the pro's and con's of a place so often turns personal? It seems to be almost as sensitive as religion and politics. I don't get it.)
Precisely. We all have different likes and dislikes. You've been to where I call home and would end up miserable if you moved here. You'd horribly miss the world-class culture you have in L.A. By the same token, I've been to and worked where you call home. I'd be miserable if I were to move there because I'd miss the rural atmosphere and abundant nature right outside my front door. Yet despite our different lifestyles we can get along. Like you I find it curious that some become so defensive when in the end it's all about personal preferences and nothing more.

For us it IS very personal because when you drop big money and time, time = money, with long term investments, then fast forward 10-20 years and you're surrounded by poor, uneducated 3rd world immigrants, nightmarish traffic from hell, rude people, Hollywood wanna-be's, gang bangers, etc; then I have to 360 our lives? Please!

We pay out taxes, we help the local community, we donate and volunteer. But now we have to move because of all the bullsh*t going on now in CA?

Buddy, since you're living in heaven on earth, wherever that is, then why not indulge us with where you are? Like what town in Nor Cal? Please indulge us because we are all ears.

Ps. We own multiple homes around the US. Mostly rentals. MT, FL, CA, CO, etc.

I left because I couldn't afford it, but if I could, I would move back. I was in one of the priciest areas though in the Monterey area. Not too congested, smaller in scope and lots of old California still around, but very expensive.
A little too cool and foggy for some but I loved it and warmer sunnier areas were only a short drive away.

It really shouldn't matter. But I know why it happens. Part of it boils down to human nature. One man's dream location is another's nightmare. While it's the same 'physical place' it is something completely different in their minds - different realities in fact. Hence the dramatic declarations and statements which are all so frequent on the forum such as Escape the liberal, overcrowded, overpriced, over-regulated, nanny state, hell hole called California now! Quick, the sky is falling so get out while you still can! I mean why should anyone who lives here take that personal, right? They are only speaking of the place most of us love and enjoy daily. We who live in CA out of choice because it's the best state for us see it in a completely different way. When someone shouts from the rooftops how crappy the liberal bastion called CA is in a discussion forum there will be debate. In fact if I go to any other state forum and proclaim what a crappy state it is as 'circles the drain' people will comment there is well.
