That's $975 a month for a room?! Oy. And not even with a private bathroom!
And didn't she say that she wanted to be in a natural environment with water for kayaking, mountains, etc., etc..

Think outside of CA. Try Eureka Springs, AR

If you could pay about $1750, then you'd be able to find a studio in Laguna Beach ($1700), plus a few apartments in nearby cities with fairly easy access to LB.

You're catching on. Re: the bolded--the exception is Sacramento, if you call that "near the Bay Area". It has a population of the size you're looking for, for socializing, is within day-trip distance of the ocean (even closer to the East Bay), and is warmer than the oceanside communities and Bayside communities. It's not known for spiritual centers/Eastern religion, but you could probably find something, if that's important. Whether or not you'll like it, we can't say. Sac'to tends to provoke intense debate on this forum.

Sacramento is very hot in the summer and the air quality is awful.
And i will continue to point that out on the general California forum when Sacramento is recommended as i think that it (the air quality) is something that people who don't know the state should be aware of.
I do not say this in order to provoke a debate. And there's not really anything to be debated about re; the air quality.
Whether people like Sacramento (i happen to not) is a subjective matter and arguing about something subjective is fruitless and silly.

I agree. It's even worse around Woodland and Davis and north. It's the agriculture. When they're plowing, the air is full of dirt. When they burn the rice fields, it's full of smoke, there are ag planes that spray chemicals, too, over the crops.

I used to live in the area, and would sometimes have to close up the windows in my car (that didn't have air conditioning), because I could barely breathe while driving because of whatever was going on with the crops/harvesting, etc.

Sacramento is a little bit better, but it's still in the same valley, so is also affected.

Pretty much this. 50K a year is studio apartment money (at best) in the Bay Area...and forget about the landlord of that studio allowing a dog.
