If California decided to secede from the U.S., do you believe this state could survive as an independent country? Could the U.S. survive without California?

Possibily. I think the US could survive without it better than California could on its own. It would depend entirely on the form of government it would assume, and my guess is that it would tie in even closer to Mexico. That would change a lot of its trade and economics.

The Republic of California is a powerhouse state [more than any other in the U.S]. We feed the nation & the world & can stand on its own just with immense agriculture. Producing fruit\ veggies\ nuts\ cotton\ oil is big business yet it is not the only thing California exports. The impact California has on the nation can not be easily measured but communication is our main contribution w/ Internet\ movies\ television\ personalities\ lifesytle. Social trends often begin here, becoming the norm for the U.S. & beyond. California often overshadows the nation in world influence. When traveling abroad many Americans find it is better to say they live in California rather than the U.S. because foreigners view California more favorably than America [esp since Bush became president].

The natural barriers of the Sierra & deserts almost make California separate from the nation. And with an 800 mile coastline, California has ports & commerce to Asia\ Pacific Rim.

California definitely can fare better by leaving the U.S. & it would be America's loss if California were to secede [which it never will]. There has always been popular talk of California leaving the U.S. esp since President Bush but it is just whimsy.

Listen to Happ. California gives more to the US than it receives, even in terms of federal taxes paid to the US by California vs federal money spent on California.

Given that the Gov is begging for $$ from the Feds, I'm not sure California could survive. =) If the legislature tightened its belt and got the budget under control (or the pork barrel or welfare or whatever the problem is), California might survive.

Or if we got more of our tax dollars back instead of sending them to welfare bums in Alaska, West Virginia, and the Deep South.

If California left the USA your national languages would soon become Spanish, Mandarin and Valley Girl English. Your spending habits would have to change quickly and you would have to stop all these silly propositions that you keep approving. All of which cost $$ to enforce. Such as making sure chickens are comfy. Does the rest of the USA need the San Joaquin Valley food sources? Not really. You dont grow anything that cant be grown in Florida, Texas, Tennessee or Michigan.

Both are better off with each other.
If cal separated it would become more left wing and eventually become more like mexico with slums, corruption and drug gangs.
Just because it would keep more tax dollars in the state doesn't mean that money would be spent(or saved) wisely. The govt here has already proven it cant handle then finances it currently has to deal with.
