Where are the affordable areas of Southern California? Let's consider affordable to mean prices approaching national medians for rent or home values.

Probably not. There are some homes north of San Diego that are not totally expensive, but you also get relatively few square feet in the homes too.

The problem is that you can spend $750K and still not have a home that's up to my standards. I simply wouldn't want to live in such small homes in such raggety neighborhoods.

Look where there is clusters of section 8 housing. If you are poor you are better off than middle class in Socal. If you have AIDS there is the Hagan Place Project in Laguna Beach. There is low income section 8 housing in Long Beach, Laguna Beach, Santa Ana Etc..

Anywhere in the Central Valley is always the cheapest. Try outside Sacramento areas, or Riverside or San Bernardino counties. Cheaper.

probably Blythe and Needles, Barstow as well. Also anywhere in the lower Coachella Valley (i.e. southeast of Indian Wells) or in Imperial County is cheaper as well

what you do is go to google earth and bring up a satellite image

Find areas with lots and lots and lots of brown and no major urbanization nearby and those areas are cheap
