No, you most certainly don't speak for most people, and no, there is no "should" with respect to tipping. Tipping is 100% voluntary, and decided on by whatever metric each individual decides upon.

I wasn't implying you were or weren't implying anything. I was just adding more observations to the discussion, developing your point about working conditions a bit more.

A server brings out a burger and fries, and I need to tip 6 or 7 bucks. But if a server brings me out a steak I need to tip 20 bucks?

Nope, not gonna happen.

$6 or 7? How much is that burger and fries?

If you can afford $100 for a steak surely you can afford $120. But no, tipping is not mandatory and if you do tip, the amount is not set in concrete. Since this appears to be the hill you are determined to die on, go ahead and die on it.

I'd say it's perfectly acceptable to not tip in that case.

In California, servers make the same minimum wage as almost everyone else, which is $16/hour as of this year.

Fast food workers will start making $20/hour in April. But no one tips for fast food, do they? That's not what we are talking about and we don't call the people who are working at McDonalds "servers."

Even in states where servers make less than the general minimum, if their tips aren't enough to cover the difference, their employer is obliged to make it up. So no one REALLY makes $2.13/hour or whatever the federal minimum for tipped employees is, no matter what.

Anyway, tips are always at your discretion. But since one of my daughters is a server, I know exactly how hard they work. There's a lot more to it than just carrying out plates of food. It is by no means easy to be a good server, and I always tip 20% and happy to do it.
Many fast food places ask for a tip when you pay the bill. McDonald's does not, but Starbuck's does, and Five Guys does, and many more do. "No Tip" is an option of the screen but it makes a person feel like a miser if they choose that option.

I’m a good tipper for service but I feel absolutely no shame or guilt for selecting “no tip” for counter service. I don’t tip if I buy a donut in a bakery, etc.

Always hilarious to see those that are so invested in trying to shame others into tipping as they do.

Hey Rockefeller, maybe all I can afford is 100 bucks?
