Where in California could I locate to where I would only use public transportation? I do not drive. It needs to be an affordable place, under $800. Having access to some form of the arts: Museums/art schools/galleries is very important.

Going to be really, really tough. Maybe a room share in San Francisco?

Thanks for your responses. It has been very discouraging. I've heard that Santa Rosa has some transportation. Downtowns with work, interests, and access to some transportation seems to be the key.

Check out BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) on the internet and look at the map of where BART stations are. Maybe there are places near BART stations, say in Fremont, Hayward, Pittsburg or some other out laying area where you could find a place and still ride the train into SF or Oakland for museums, shopping, night life, etc. easily.

Default You don't need a car in many areas of CA

First of all, there is another thread touching on this topic in General US, "Cities with reliable and extensive public transporation?"

Cities with reliable and extensive public transporation?

In CA, you'll find many areas where you don't need a car. San Francisco and San Diego are two. Many areas of LA also offer living close to transit and rail lines with walkable destinations to stores and life's other needs. Smaller towns, like Davis and Santa Barbara, are fabulously conducive to car-free living. Are you healthy enough to ride a bike? Get one (along with a helmet and a bright bicycling jacket). You can ferry your bike on busses and trains for longer trips. Set up your situation so that you can live without a car (or depend on one less). It's not that hard if you really want to do it. You'll save a ton of money, too!

My brother in law lives in Sacramento for the last 20 years with no car. He rides a bike to work, takes the BART if he travels across town. He does not pay much for rent, but he has been in the same apartment this whole time.

He is always wishing he had a car thou.
