The Gold Rush, railroads, oil, ranching, etc. At one time Sacramento was known as one of the roughest cities in the country.
That's right William the wild west is in Wyoming, not Sacramento. Actually Wyoming is like DX from Sacramento

I'm well aware of the history of California.
But CA does not, in any way, evoke memories or notions of the "wild west" ... that history is not at all alive / obvious in most parts of the sate.
Whereas that energy and attitude and sense of history, etc., etc., are still quite present in the intermountain west.

Has anyone ever heard of Calico, CA? Coloma? California is riddled with old ghost towns from it's wild west past.

Lots of Wild West in CA, we can start with Joaquin Murrieta. Or, the bad man from Bodie, or Truckee and the 601

Alive? If you are curious about the history of your state, I cannot direct you to a better site than this; http://www.tapadero.com/html/primeros/primeros1.html (broken link)

I know the history of California well enough.
What i'm saying is obvious.
And as someone who knows and loves Nevada (as an example), you know what i am saying ... and if you don't ... what can i say?
I was not talking about the history.
I was saying ... i am saying ... that if you drive through / explore any state in the intermountain west today, the wild west history and/or the "vibe" of the "west" (what the average joe would associate with the "wild west" or the western frontier, etc.) is far more present and "alive" than it is in almost any place in California.

I may not completely understand what you are saying. I spend a great deal of time in Nevada, and a great deal of time in California.

What you see in Nevada exists here also, It just isn't found along the interstate. The fact that the "West" continues to exist here in California allows me to live in California. If I was forced to relocate to one of California's Blobboppolises, I'd shoot my self.

Within 10 miles of my home here, there are two houses, one built in 1836, the other in 1846, that is years older than anything in Nevada.

If I had time I could tell you about Jim Beckwith tracking the mass murderers from San Miguel to Santa Barbara, they were found caught and shot. That history still lies on the land.

I have said this before, the ranchero life pre American conquest was to me, the highest stage of man's evolution. It was watered down, but not ended by the conquest, and in fact, moved to Nevada. Most of the American period history of Nevada, is that Nevada was essentially a colonial possession of California.

Here is some light research for you. Henry Miller, no, not that one, the other one, Miller and Lux
