Don't ever let those people tell you you are not free or America is more free than you those type of people probably don't know much about the world outside their state.
Freedom of Speech is an American concept and has no place in Canada. If someone is saying something that hurts someone else's feelings than the government is right in their efforts to fine and/or jail them.
Want to talk about whatever you want and freely make jokes at another's expense? Then don't come to Canada. Follow the rules of speech or you might find yourself in a bit of trouble. If you don't like it then stay in the US. It's not a lot to ask. We don't have to apologize to anyone.
Marc LeMire is right. We are getting along just fine and don't need American style "freedom of speech" aka people freely going around saying whatever they want.
It's not oppressive at all. Some of us find the American style concept of saying and doing whatever you want whenever you want oppressive. That is why we are Canada and you are America. We just have different ways of doing things.
I agree. Free speech and freedom of expression are not part of the Canadian identity, and we don't need to change that. The Americans can keep all of their "anything goes" mentality to themselves.
If you hurt someone's feelings badly enough you should face consequences. We can't have a society where people just run around saying whatever they want.

Freedom of speech got its start long before the USA was a teardorp in its founding fathers' eyes. Canada adheres to freedom of speech.
Canada does have freedom of speech to a point but it comes with some logical restrictions Eg;, obscenity treason, sedition, blasphemous and defamatory libel, disruption of religious worship, hate propaganda, spreading false news, public mischief, indecency and other forms.
While he makes some good points, I found it a bit unsatisfying. Especially after hearing this interview on Radio-Canada yesterday (which tipped me off to the article). I thought the interview was much more interesting.
For those who can understand French. Neil MacDonald speaks excellent French. His wife is Joyce Napier, who was the French CBC's reporter in DC. Interesting that Joyce Napier has an anglo name, but is a francophone and her parents are Egyptian...
