Awww. . .my youngest lil one loves her plastic. I've tried discouraging her but I swear she has a serious case of pica (the psychological disorder where humans like to eat inedible objects like dirt. seriously. my cat has to have it). She actually had some cellophane hanging out of her rear the other day *rolls eyes* freaking cat! She eventually passed it, but we spent $1200 on a vet bill one time because she ate a felt toy (the long string on a pole thing). It was in a cabinet. She broke in and ate it. 2 feet! Argh. Since then, not more string-like toys, no yarn in the house, etc. But someone she always finds something. Christmas is fun. We have blue sparkly snowflakes on the tree and there are always sparkly blue surprises in the litter box when we go to clean it. Haha.
i have four cats. one (female) loves plastic....and dresser knobs...and window blinds. i have another one that can't see well but manages to find eraser and rubber bands. i try to keep him away from them. i'm a freak when it comes to what my "babies" may eat and hurt themselves.
My girl kitty latest plastic feddish is plastic straws. I like to drink my water threw a straw and if I leave my glass anywhere in her vicinity, my straw will mysteriously dissapear...
I usually find it died a horrible death, hidden in her other feddish; one of her cardboard boxes she sleeps in. Like an offering ot the cardboard Box gods.
Yes, Catzilla loves plastic. Grocery Bags. The plastic bag the potatoes are packed in. Bubble Wrap. He eats cardboard too. He just has to rub and rub this stuff and then chew on it. Must be the scent.
And paper towels don't last in our house - if I am cleaning and set a roll on the table, he'll abscond with it and shred it before I can figure out where it has gone to.
He also likes to steal small toys from my teenage son's room. We've found more little cars and game pieces in the weirdest places because he takes them and hides them. He has a real territory issue with any young adult male.
my kitties tend to do that too.
Fluffy (under 1 year, female) loves to chew on pretty much everything, from toys to poliester.
The male, Dorel, loves to chew on plants mostly, but he does have a soft spot for the flower ribbons
My 11yo cat LOVES plastic garbage bags - clawing at them incessantly and chewing on them. Three different times I've woken up to a choking-up-a-hairball sound with no accompanying hairball. The third time I even took her to the emergency vet because she was having some obvious breathing difficulties afterwards. Of course once she got there she seemed fine and they couldn't find anything wrong... then a couple days later I found a giant piece of garbage bag in the litter box and put the pieces together. Now I can't use garbage bags in any area open to the cats. They are just weird creatures.
YES! What is up with that, anyway? I think it may have something to do with them being declawed--they figure since they can't scratch anything, why not chew? My cat likes to chew the plastic on my 12-pack of toilet paper on my bathroom floor. We are in the process of moving right now & he also LOVES to do the 'pawing' motion on the boxes---he does this to the couch, the bed, boxes, the chair---again, think it's because he's declawed & even without claws, cats have a sense of having to 'scratch' on something--I still laugh sometimes because it is so cute. He also does this to the sliding glass door--'makes his mark.' Cats sure do like to mark their territory!
My cats are not declawed and still eat plastic bags. And craft foam, flip flops, etc.
Three vets so far have said, "Hmmm. Never heard that before. Keep the plastic away from them." Well, duh!
We've made the switch to canvas grocery bags (for the sake of the cats, not environmental concerns), don't buy craft foam or foam sandals. I also have to protect the paper towels. Bubble wrap has to be picked up immediately. Sometimes they get desperate and start attacking the trash cans, trying to get to the bags.
Weirdness. They are from different litters. Found one (outside, very ill) at about age 1 week - 10 days old. The other was born to my boss's cat the day we found the first. Took her in at 6 weeks. This behavior began when they were about 2 1/2 mos old. Both are female. They were on Science Diet at first, but then stopped eating so we switched them to Purina Kitten Chow. They've been on Purina ONE since I took them off the Kitten Chow.
My 15 year old female cat goes after cellophane and ziplock bags. I found another site that was talking about a disorder called PICA. Here is a link: Pica in Cats - Page 1
