Very interesting indeed. There's one line in the article that, to me, says it all... that the AVMA's main focus is to promote the economic well being of vets. Perhaps this failed 'Americas Favorite Vet' contest should give them a clue that pet owners & animal lovers don't necessarily agree with their agendas. This contest was an example of 'if you don't agree with me, then I'll pick up my toys & go home'.
1. The outpouring of support from people calling for an end to cat declawing is undeniable. As a veterinarian who has never supported declawing cats, I was both touched and proud to see so many people willing to stand up against declawing. I can promise you your voices were heard.
He is approaching the problem the right way. It's a shame that few couldn't hold back their extreme rhetoric that derailed this effort to get the word out. But perhaps some good was done in spite of it. I hope so anyway.

Yea... just as we were about to make a really BIG point by landsliding him (peacefully), people had to go off and land it in the gutter.
Change through peace can also be "change through votes"
With all our promotion Richter was going to walk away with the award. Now, with all of them winning it, it has become just about pointless.
One thing I can guarantee... he's getting more business from responsible pet owners who heard about this and I'm GLAD!
It's an example of how much good facebook can do by spreading the word about something, and how it can degenerate when fanatical, angry people start feeding off each other into a crowd frenzy. Very unfortunate.
Remember the AVMA is involved. Don't be so quick to assume the truth is being told.
Publicity for not declawing is not a good thing for the AVMA. Toooooo much money involved with declawing.
If actual bullying was going on, don't you think there would be a LOT of screen shots and/or quotes?
I'm not saying there weren't some azzhole-type comments and/or heated discussions...on BOTH sides.
The AVMA needed an out. They needed to get the attention AWAY from declawing, and all the reasons not to.
There's probably some truth to that. Wouldn't surprise me at all.
It would be disingenuous for them to promote declawing as an acceptable practice, when their own contest for 'Vet of the Year' showed the cat-guardian public at large to be adamantly against it.
