Truly shocking. A really fine actor.

It was. He was found by his personal assistant with a needle in his arm:

It's been on the news over the past few months here that heroin use is having a huge resurgence recently, especially on college campuses.

I wish we'd spend as much time fighting the Mexican drug cartels as we do fighting in other countries.

I feel so sorry for Hoffman's children.

This sucks. One of my favorite actors. I didn't realize he was even an addict.

His previous issue was snorting heroin, not sure how reliable the story of "a needle in his arm" is?

Wow. Heard this and thought...'He can't be much different in age than me'. I was right, both mid 40s but what puzzles me is why you dabble with heroin at this age...with a family. I can see getting mixed up with certain drugs in your early teens and 20s. But once you get established (and I think he was in his craft and with a wife and kids), I'd think your drug exposure would be booze and coke (maybe that's too 80s) if anything.

Sad.

I wonder if marijuana was the first drug he ever tried?
