What is "best" to one person may not be to another person. It also depends on your price range and what you are looking for in a neighborhood. If you search for "Summerville neighborhoods" in this forum (search box is on main forum page, "Search this Forum"), a lot of info will come up that has already been discussed here.
Exactly as TealDreamer said... give us ideas of budget, # of bdrms, desired amenities, are schools important?, is there a commute to work to consider, etc and we can point you in the right direction.
Everyone seems fixed on Summerville or Mt. Pleasant. I assume most is from what is learned viewing online sites and a brief 1 or 2 visits to the above places. Really you need to rent and really look all over the low country. Summerville is losing a lot of its appeal due to the large population and building growth then add in the traffic. Still a nice place but once you've been here a while and investigated the rest of the low country, you will find there are plenty of other nice area's to reside.
I admit I'm biased when it comes to Summerville, because I live in the old part of town, and am somewhat removed from a lot of the growth, exept the traffic, which seems to increase every day.
That's not to say I'm not paying attention to what's going on, though.

How about a single home (no condos or townhouses) $130-$140k, 3+ bedrooms, and yes schools are very important. Been reading great things about the Dorchester 2 SD. Husband is looking at Charleston for prospective jobs. Looking for a maybe 30 min commute. He said no more than 1hr commute.
Currently live in the north in an old coal mining town where lot sizes run about 30x170 so we're definitely looking for some space. Tired of being able to reach out and touch my neighbors.

You're asking for too much in that price range in Summerville D2. You will have to give up something, either indoor or outdoor space, or probably both.
When we were looking at houses in that range in Dorchester 2 we saw homes in Brandymill, Briarwood, Wescott, Scotts Mill, Kings Grant, Quail Arbor. We bought in Summerville Place. I know there are others, thats the neighborhoods that had houses available in that range a year ago.
I really love Ashborough, but that was more than we wanted to spend (we are downsizing empty nesters)
When you are buying at that price range, you will have to make a choice. Here the newer the home the less yard, the bigger the yard the older the home.
You will need to check neighborhoods out, depends what you like in a neighborhood. For example, We have friends that love Wescott for the amenities, but we like older neighborhoods that have more trees.
Just keep in mind that just because you are 30 minutes on map from Summerville to downtown, that is not during peak traffic times (it can take me up to a hour to a hour 10 minutes depending on traffic and when I leave). And keep distance from highway in mind if your husband needs the highway everyday. Some parts of Summerville are much easier to get to highway from.
