My husband has the opportunity to move to the Charlotte area for his job, but we don't know anything about the area. We have 3 kids in middle and high school, so schools are important. And if we could live somewhat outside the city that would be nice. We're in DFW currently and are tired of the big city feel. What are good places to live and good school systems? Also, if you know, how does Charlotte compare to Spartanburg/ Greenville, SC (another option for us)?
We recently moved to Baxter Village in Fort Mill, SC (across the state line but minutes from Ballantyne--www.baxtervillage.com). We love it--very family-oriented area, fantastic schools, friendly neighbors, the whole deal. And, of course, lower taxes. If BV isn't your style, there are some lovely areas in the same area in Tega Cay and Lake Wylie; I think we would have been extremely happy there, too.

Do you know the approximate location in Charlotte? How long of a commute would he tolerate? That would help to assist you. Also, will your husband need frequent use of the airport?
Not really sure yet where in Charlotte he could be placed. We won't need frequent access to the airport. Travel time isn't super important either. He travels all over DFW right now, up to an hour away! We just want to be in a safe community with good schools.

1 hour travel time does give more options. There are many nice areas that are within an hour's drive from Charlotte, but Charlotte is quite large, so the location in Charlotte could make some areas prohibitive. I'm not trying to be difficult, just honest. For instance, I live 30 miles west of Charlotte. I can be at the airport in ~30 minutes, but there are areas of Charlotte that are more than 1 hour from my house.
