I currently live in NY and I am in the mortgage industry but looking to get out into another avenue with banking. My wife and I along with our 2 and half year old are considering the move to Charlotte over the next two months. Can someone give me an insight on how the banking industry is where are good areas to live with a 2 and half year old.
I have been reading the threads and want more opinions. My husband and I are thinking about Charlotte. We are not in any rush whatsoever. We are going to come down within the year to look around to see if it fits what we are looking for.So far via internet I love what I see. He works for Time Warner Cable and is going to try and transfer. I am going to live off my good ol' NYC pension so no work for me. His commute right now is about ten minutes but he stated he would be willing to travel as much as 45 minutes but no more.(spoiled) We have three children one who will be starting elementary school, one who will be in middle school and one in high school by the time we are ready to leave NY. Schools are my upmost top priority. Looking for a house between 200's-400's. Something with amenities like a pool since we have one here and would rather someone else take care of it. A nice low crime neighborhood with children would be ideal. Not too close to each other. We live on Staten Island now which is relatively low in crime compared to the rest of New York but it does have it's drawbacks. I know that there is no Utopia in this world but can I find something close? Thanks in advance for input and suggestions....
I thought Charlotte was going to be a utopia,But before you sell every thing and come down rent first. The shopping is not what we are used to no deli no top tomato no telco for all of our favorite junk if you need a good can opener expect to pay a lot for it. No New Jersey run for good sales and no tax. If you need schools they look great on the outside but are empty headed on the inside its all geared to sports. The supermarkets are the prices of Manhatten Gristedes and tax everything. Just check out Harris Teeter or Lowes on line. It is beautiful in Charlotte and you can get Todt Hill type house really cheap. But in the end it costs more to maintain the lifestyle we are used to. I only lasted a two years. My kids are much happier and in honors classes again. I'll keep my snow and dirt and 1200 sq feet, there is nothing like N.Y. I hope the family renting my Charlotte mansion love it as much as I did when we were living in it

Auntie, as a native of Charlotte I commend you for posting this and it should be required reading for anyone contemplating a move here.

Very true, Charlotte is not a utopia...that is if you are looking for a cheap version of NY or NJ, and consider those places to be heaven. It is designed to not be NJ or NY, on purpose.
We move slower, talk slower, prioritize things a bit differently, are crazy about real BBQ (only pigs I may add), really do try to practice good manners, will ask you where you attend church after talking with you longer than 6 minutes, and love college sports more than the NBA, NFL, etc. These things don't readily appeal to many folks. But, we are a bit stubborn and kinda like it the way it is.
If you desire a better education than CMS for your children, be ready to pay for some of the top end private schools. I hope things work out well for you and your family....start acquiring that taste for vinegar and pepper sauce and you'll do great!

Edit: Wait, on second reading you think it was too expensive to live here? No way..that is just not true.

Trying to find a full time job in banking is REALLY tough. There are so many people that have been displaced and get priority that you really need to have specific needed skills or be very lucky. Most of the open jobs never make it out to the public.
There are a few more consulting jobs but be warned that the 18 month rule will be a hurdle. After 18 months you will have to leave your job 3-6 months before coming back assuming there is even an opening and many companies will not hire you in that in between time because too many people take the job short term and leave.
Wells/Wachovia is still mid merger - there will be more layoffs coming. Bank of America just did another layoff. Not a good place to be - I would apply and have a job BEFORE I came here.
Thank you for the response. I am currently in the mortgage business and my company does have an office in Charlotte. I am probably going to come down and work for them for a little bit. I wanted to see how the market is and are jobs almost impossible to get like it is here in NY. My wife is also going to be looking for an interior design job as she is a designer. Hopefully she will be able to find something.
