Hitting a speed bump in a parking lot or drive does more damage to your struts and shocks that anything else. When I can, I drive over the humps, slowly at a 45 degree angle so that the struts don't have so much stress as they would get with a straight on hit. Check with any tire or auto shop and ask them what speed bumps do to vehicles.
Ive never dealt with speed humps till now. I was diving on North Community House Road and was completely caught off guard by one. They can really make your rear end bottom out of you dont slow down for them.
Those speed humps used to be painted white & I think some of them still are, but I've been caught by surprise by the unpainted ones, unpleasantly so.
My husband hit a speed bump once in NYC and it broke his axle - mind you...there was no 'speed bump' sign anywhere and the speed bump was the same color as the street and not marked so it could not be seen until you went over it.
Okay so today I had the Passat & decided to see what speeds I could go over the road humps on Blue Heron in Pineville at. It seems that the lowest speed was 10mph & the highest was 35mph.
Slowing down and driving carefully over spped bumps is one thing and this is what I do.
Stopping completely seems to be for the following reasons.
1). The have a car with lowered suspension. Such cars are innapropriate for our roads and they should get cars that run on normal roads. NCDOT should examine such vehicles and ban them from the roads.
2). The do not know how to drive and should be re-tested by the NCDOT.
3). They are complete f!^&ing idiots and should stop driving immediately.
All the other reasons relating to children, grandparents, fragile china are, imo irrelevant.

I'm glad I don't live in a world where you can effect those types of changes. Are you from the Boston area by any chance?

No, I live in a world where intelligence and common sense prevails.
Good driving abilities are a neccessary requirement for proceeding upon our roads and stopping at every speed bump quite frankly negates this.
Finally a vehicle lowered so much that it cannot easily and safely navigate one of these bumps is a danger to other road users and serves lilttle purpose since the ground effect this generates will not come into effect at speeds much below the legal limits.
