Is there a commuter option (train or bus) between Charlotte NC and Wake Forest University? I am looking at a position in Winston Salem near Wake Forest University but I would prefer to live in Charlotte. Is that unrealistic or is it commutable? I would be ok with a 1 hour and 15 minute one way commute. would driving be quicker or easier?
Lol...I have lived in both and I would definitely rather live in Charlotte too.
Don't think there is a train.....possible bus but then you would have to head to the Ch bus station, arrive at WS bus station and then catch a city bus to the WF area. Not good. Makes for a long day and not always on time.
It depends on where you are in Charlotte....across town can be up to one hr. If you are on the north side, with close access to interstate 85, you could be there in 1 hr and 15-20 min I think.
85N to 52N; then 40w to Wake Forest exit. Still you would have traffic congestion at times that would greatly increase travel time (I85 near Charlotte and I40 at WS). Type in your address and an address in WS near Wake and see what Google maps says....
or try 77N to 40 east and see what the time is that way.
good luck! I moved away from WS recently....so happY!
The North Carolina owned Piedmont and Carolinian trains stop in High Point & Greensboro, and from there, there is a $3 shuttle to WS. You can find out more here.
There is a Van Pool too. Look at number 282 and there is contact information or you could sign up from the site. Current Vanpools
The drive is commutable but take 77 to 40 vs 85 to 52, you will be closer to that side of Winston WF is on.
The problem with train the station in Winston is no where near Wake Forest so you will either have to grab Winston bus from station or cab.
Just to clarify, there is no train station in Winston-Salem. As someone noted earlier, you take the train to High Point, then take a shuttle bus to Winston-Salem's downtown bus terminal.
And for what it's worth, I've lived in both Charlotte and Winston-Salem, and I much prefer Winston-Salem. So there.
I have a friend who may need to take a job in WS and he's weighing his options
about getting there from Charlotte every day.
If a job required attendance at a monthly meeting... that would be tolerable.
But to commit to that 80 mile & 90 minute commute for every single day? No thanks.
Either live in WS with the job (or close by)... or get a job in Charlotte.

Trust me, he has done EVERYTHING possible to get a job in Charlotte over the past 15 months.
No one should discount the seriousness of our very high unemployment rate here.
He is not in a position to move either.
