We're thinking of moving to Charlotte from Connecticut, and we're traveling there soon to check out some neighborhoods. We have two small children, so schools are important to us. Also, we need a short commute to the banking area of Charlotte. We're used to the crazy real estate market in CT, so price is not a major concern, but if we could stay under a million, that would be best. Can anyone recommend some nice neighborhoods to look at while I'm in town? I'd also love any recommendations for realtors. Thanks.

Ok, I am bolding that so people don't tell you to move to Tega Cay or Union County (just ribbing y'all).
You are going to be shocked at how much house you can get for $500k-1mill. GIANT house! Great neighborhoods. I would personally look at the following areas (and this is how they are listed in an MLS search): Myers Park, Eastover, Dilworth. Also, search for homes in the Providence Rd area (the area closest to 3rd st for the simplest commute) and even parts of SouthPark (certain areas are actually only a short morning commute on the surface streets, no interstate travel at all).

Oh Dang!...I missed another potential customer to possibly persuade them to move to Tega Cay (think commission...commission..commission)...oh Wait....I'm not even a realtor!!

You could live just about anywhere in the Charlotte area for under a million...but if you want to be close to town, I would suggest Myers Park. I like the recommendations for Dilworth and Eastover as well. Southpark is also nice...All depends on what the other important criteria are for you in a home.

For young families who want to live close to uptown I highly recommend Elizabeth, Dilworth and Cotswold. (Myers Park and Eastover are wonderful, but your money won't buy as much there as many homes are in millions).
These areas are all assigned to excellent schools and would give you a commute to the center of uptown in anywhere from 5 minutes to 20 minutes in the worst traffic.
Look for a neighborhood with small children - We moved from one of those great neighborhoods that had lots of nice homes but no kids - I had to drive everywhere and missed people with kids our age - Try Huntersville, Macaulay has so many stay at home moms with small children and northerners.
Why people only talk about the south part in this forum?!
There are many other lovely areas to consider, such as Huntersville.
Just my 2cents.
Yes, there are. BUT, when a person has the amount of money to spend that this poster mentioned, AND they want to be close to uptown, south Charlotte is the best choice.
