Build it. Have you been to downtown Durham? Have you seen what that minor league park has done to revitalize their downtown scene? Charlotte already has a very strong Uptown vibe, but this would only enhance it.
Durham doesn't have a pro team. Charlotte has two of them. This is why Durham has decent support for the minor league team. Plus, Durham has had other revitalize things like DPAC. Like you stated, Uptown already has a strong pull; a minor league team would not have the impact you think.

See the Bobcats. Those games do well that you describe, the rest of the games are empty. Plain and simple... if the team doesn't win, the people will stop coming.
An MLB team is farfetched. What owner has said they would step up to support one? Let alone how much do they plan to use to build a team. Without one and approval from MLB, I wouldn't bother with a stadium uptown. The real talk is it is just a minor team. Moving uptown would incur a higher cost to attend; higher ticket prices, parking prices, concession potentially up... no longer the "take all the neighbor kids to a game" cheap event. Cheap factor is what brings people to the minors. This will easily keep attendence where it currently is.
No one is saying build a major league stadium. We are saying make it expandable to support one. There is a huge difference. No one in their right mind would build a stadium with major league capacity for a minor league team.
I'm sorry for pissing off the hardcore Knights fans, but if a major league team wanted to move here, goodbye Knights. There is way too much potential for draw to pass on that. And those games that don't sell out, no big deal. They will when Charlotte develops its own baseball following. The one thing we lack here is a history with a team. Call it growing pains if you will. People who grow up here will grow up to be fans of the home team. It 's local patriotism, if there is such a beast.
Son't build the major league park now, but makethe sure we can have one ahould the need arise. It will be more expensive, but if you are taking 8.5 million of our dollars, you better be prepared to be pushed aside when the big ahow comes to town. It is as simple as that. Ask for our money, get it on our terms. Don't lime it, don't take our mney. Period.
Nothing sadder than a Cubs fan. Lol ; Well, maybe a Bobcats fan.
Except that the Cubs are a storied franchise that have been around since the 1900's. Being a Cubs fan is passed down from generation to generation. You are born into it. It has to do with loyalty and tradition. The Cubs may be the "lovable loosers", but they have the best (and most loyal) fans in the entire MLB!!
The Bobcats...well, they are a relatively new franchise in a relatively new city that really do not have any kinds of traditions to them....so, while people are certainly allowed to be fans of whatever they want, being a Cubs fan is so much more!!
Why not build a better school system with the money?
Many people dont wear your jersey for schools. You have many people who dont have kids in public schools. Some feel we give enough $$ already. Schools also doesnt have rhe potential to bring in the revenue like a ballpark in uptown could. Not trying to argue, just giving u one of many reasons why it wont go into rhat bucket.
The existing ft mill stadium is not falling apart. However the knights attendance stinks. One of the arguments for a new stadium is that having it uptown will attract a large chunk of population from areas like concord and lake norman.
We live in Concord and just run up to Kannapolis for baseball. Its affordable, fun, and easy to get in and out. Personally, we would not go to downtown Charlotte for baseball.
Why not build a better school system with the money?
That's what the lottery is for. Well, for tiny parts of the school system anyway.
I'm not excited about taxpayers funding any part of the bill for a new stadium. The argument always is "look at all the money this will bring in" and while I see that, it doesn't affect my bottom line or those of most people who aren't in certain businesses. If the new ballpark was such a revenue generating machine, private funding should cover it.
Meh, it hardly matters what we think. We didn't want TW Arena but that happened anyway. That was much bigger money. $8.5mil is throwaway money to politicians.

MLB in Charlotte will never happen. City is just way too small to support a team. I remember reading somewhere that if we were to have a team we would have one of the smallest if not the smallest metro areas in MLB. No way would we be able to fill a stadium even half full for 81 games. Its a pipe dream, and with the way MLB is played if we had a team it would basically be a triple A team. Just look at the Pirates and the Royals.
