We've owned two other homes, one in the northeast, we paid for water only (guessing sewer was either part of our taxes or was somehow built into the water bill). That average was about $30/month (paid quarterly).
We moved to somewhere else in NC before landing here, we had one company for water and sewer, the sewer use bill was based on water usage (good plan, IMO), can't remember the cost, but definitely not what we're paying here in Crismark.
Now we pay very little for water, our bill is about $12 a month, BUT we pay the flat rate $65.07 for sewer use. CRAZY. My understanding is that it's based on lot size and number of bathrooms in the home (doesn't matter if you hardly use any water at all!). So, almost $1000 total for water and sewer a year where I used to pay about $360 (but that number likely has gone up since 2006 when I paid it, let's call it $500 adjusted).
I don't think it would stop me from buying a home that I wanted, but would be sure that that "extra" $500 a year is budgeted for.
I personally, love the neighborhood. It's quiet, lots of kids, lots of cops live here. I feel very safe and comfortable. I just think the sewer thing is unreal.
I called Aqua when they made me set up a payment plan...and chewed the customer service lady out...told her their business practiced sucked. They told me "we don't know we have new customers until they call us to set up their account."
So what you're telling me is, if I had never called, they would never have known the difference...???
Probably not. Why would I think "who else can I call to see if they'd let me give them money for a service I thought I was already paying someone else?" That makes less than no sense.
The house across the street from me has been vacant (but not for sale??) for over a year. If I don't see Aqua out there drilling to block their sewer, I'm just going to call them and tell them I moved. I know people in the subdividion who've lived there for years and don't pay to Aqua...I think it's a scam.
It's ridiculous. Unless we organize and fight it, nothing is going to happen. NC Public Commissions approved the rate to begin with. So, we need to go to them and fight, and involve the media. The neighborhood is silent about it since some haven't received the sewer bills yet. A scam, absolutely!!
And all these really affordable houses are now for sale in Crismark...
