This expansion which we are discussing and what Foxx and McCrory have their panties in a wad over will not be ran with 3 trolleys... They will be used with modern streetcars....
The expansion adds 2.5 miles. They actually don't have a detailed plan for what kinds of vehicles would be used for the $119M expansion. It's in the city council minutes. There is some concern about the ability to lay electrical lines for the vehicles through Trade & Tryon. This would interfere with numerous events that are scheduled in downtown when they close down the streets.
Walton, when asked what cars would be used, made a vague reference to vehicles that may run on batteries to address the issue but that nothing was decided. Walton has since resigned as city manager. So according to the city minutes, it's incorrect to say modern street cars will be used. They have made no plans.
The $119 didn't include money to operate the line. It did not include a maintenance facility. Basically Foxx is shooting from the hip.
If this streetcar was to go thru Myers Park, would this even be an issue? We wouldn't be taking up 12 or so pages talking about this issue if this streetcar was going thru the more affluent areas of Charlotte, but b/c it's going thru the east and west sides, it's a controversy!

Psh. It starts in Elizabeth. The issue has nothing to do with anything except for funding and the clash of politicians.

I agree. It's a bad idea no matter where it's going. Not that it being a bad idea (or the taxpayers disagreeing with it) will even slow it down if local government has anything to do with it.

Maybe it would be an issue. Myers Park & Eastover were built specifically for automobile owners. This was to keep out "undesirable" who might ride in on the city streetcar system.

Myers Park also stated clearly that non-whites could not own property (or rent property) in the neighborhood. Such racist deed-rules are now unconstitutional, but they are still on the deed documents of some old Myers Park properties. Hidden In Old Home Deeds, A Segregationist Past : NPR
Personally, I don't think the Streetcar issue would fly with the GOP in any neighborhood. As others have stated already, Foxx really needs to work on an east/west light rail line. No matter how this streetcar is built or designed, people see it as a "toy" rather than a real rapid transit solution.

Oh good grief.
Must EVERYTHING include the race card? So sick of it.
And this is not a GOP vs. DEM issue. This is a FUNDING issue. It wouldn't matter what party Foxx and McCrory are in . . . this is all about MONEY.
And anyone who is ignoring all the stuff Southbound has relayed has their heads in the sand. (Not directing this to you, URBAN - just noticing folks don't seem to get how politics works across the state).
When did it become a problem to use the BUS? That is why people think this is a TOY. We have BUSES already. That trolley/streetcar/whatever runs a few blocks. It is my opinion that Presby/Novant would get the biggest benefit from it. No one has even thought about that . . . if the Big Wigs at Presby think it is such a big deal, why don't they ante up for it? God knows they make enough money off the community to warrant putting in their own transit system for their employees.
Think about it. What one group of people would benefit the most from that streetcar/trolley? Presby employees.
We should check out how much Novant and all their C-level dudes spent on Foxx's campaign. You might start getting an idea of why Foxx is clinging to this streetcar idea . . . Just sayin'

Thanks, Ani.
It just makes sense to build the backbone of a transit system with a type of transit that the feds support. To do otherwise is just plain dumb. People have mentioned a desire to have light rail to the airport. It's cheaper to build a spur from a light rail line going to West Charlotte than to build a streetcar line & then a later, separate, line to the airport. One reason that no one in Charlotte wants to run light rail to west Charlotte is that they would have to sit down with the folks in Gaston County now, Gaston County now controls that line (the old P & N line). After being told to go pound sand in a rat hole, Gaston went to NCDOT. NCDOT gave the line to Gaston & money to upgrade it. Then NCDOT hired a firm to manage the line. The line is now upgraded & functional again.
People are forgetting that these mass transit lines age. Equipment has to be replaced & tracks need to be worked on. Make the backbone a mode of transportation that is supported by the feds. Federal money isn't always there, but when it is, that's a big help.
Politically, people need to understand that Wayne King is #2 in the NC Republican party. He lives in Kings Mountain & McCrory owes him, big-time.The NC Republican party turned counties red that should have been blue. Dalton is a blue dog Democrat who had an actual job plan. He should have carried a lot of rural counties & certainly the urban counties. He should have carried Cleveland & Rutherford & carried neither. The NC Republican party sent out mailings in my area accusing a candidate of being against marriage because he had stated that he was against Amendment 1. They blew the dog whistle & it worked. If they did it here, they did it elsewhere. It was low & nasty.
Now McCrory owes Art Pope & Wayne King. Every person who thought that a vote for Mayor Pat was a vote for trains was mistaken. If Foxx keeps it up, McCrory will pull the state money for the blue line which will kill the federal money. Some of that money will magically turn up in the Gaston money for Kings Mountain. If anyone thinks that I'm blowing smoke, encourage Foxx & see what happens. Foxx needs to shut up, take the money for the blue route & be grateful to Bev & understand that she's no longer there & acting out is not going to work.
Ani, I agree with the question that you raised about trolleys to Presbyterian Hospital. There's a stink to it. I think that you're right about a money trail.

This is nonsense. They do not plan to build LRT to the West because it isn't cost effective. It's far too much money for the ridership calculated by their models. It's got nothing to do with political vendettas, hurt feelings, or anything else beyond this. LRT has only been considered for the Blue & Silver lines.
As I said earlier, the MTC has made it clear they will address any real proposal that comes with funding from the host county. Gaston county has an open invitation to send a representative (non-voting) to any MTC meeting even without commitments. There is no evidence that Gaston has ever submitted a project.
