After flying a few of the smaller indoor radio contolled quadcopters (drones, if you will), I have become addicted to these things. I finally made a big purchase of the new DJI Phantom 2 Vision. It hasn't arrived yet but should be here soon. I'll be pretty nervous taking this bad boy on its first flight and was wondering if there are any other Charlotte area r/c quad enthusiasts more familiar with the larger quads, that go out often to fly, or have recommended areas to fly. I'd feel more comfortable in a HUGE field, lol. There are quite a few nice YouTube videos that have really helped with the setup, etc.
Oh, and I have my AMA license so I am insured, lol...
Very nice. My buddy has a Storm Drone 6 with HD video goggles (I forget which camera he has). It's insane technology....lol
You do not necessarily need a large field. You can fly these things anywhere, they are pretty durable. Just be careful with power/phone lines etc they could interfere with the video signal.
He is messing with custom antennas at the moment to get more video signal than 2.4 GHz. Because you lose video in and out at that range pretty hard and fast (esp if your high up in the air).
Thanks Sloante74. The Storm Drone 6 looks pretty impressive. Eventually I'd like to try an 6 or 8 rotor heli. I'm still trying to find a nice core of enthusiasts here in Charlotte that I can fly with. I've left my name at the Hobby Town USA in Pineville. Also found some flyers in York, SC so I may go down there. You should check out this video.
Seems like York is r/c central. Vmax, can you ask him if there is a particular field they all go too? I just may end up having to travel a bit to find out.

He has his own field, next to the barn he built for the hobby. He is all into it. I'll ask him if he knows of a public place.

2.4Ghz is the carrier frequency, the video and remotes don't even use half of it. You gotta change wave length through amplification. The kit your friend has probably has ICs and SMDs so good luck with that..
I am waiting on the battery life to improve on these things. 15 mins of flying time on one battery doesn't cut it for me.
