Charlotte suffered a lot of damage with Hugo; it was my first year here (Welcome to Charlotte!) Power was out for 2-3 weeks in some areas; trees down, the usual mess.

What year did Hugo come through? Today we took a sightseeing ride on Lake Norman and they pointed out homes that were destroyed with Hugo. Was that from hurricane wind or from tornadoes spawned by the hurricane? I just moved here last winter and didn't really realize hurricanes would do that much damage this far inland unless it was from tornados.

I was living in Charleston during Hugo. Ground zero.
I will never stay for another hurricane.

We lived in some apartments off Sharon Rd W. and the fireplaces all had pre-fab chimneys. They were blown off the buildings and were whipping around outside the huge picture windows in the master bed-room... we moved ourselves into the living room and shared a cozy (early morning) on the couch. We had no power for about 5 days. One measly little section of our apartment complex had power back that evening... Lucky ducks!

We had just moved away from the Charleston area about a month before Hugo hit. Thank God. We went back several years later and couldn't believe all the damage that was still there. All of our friends and neighbors were out of power for a very long time. It was a horrible time.

I remember Hugo. I remember going to bed and thinking, "Those poor people in Charleston are going to get hit bad"....then late that night the thing makes it all the way up here!!! But I don't think Hanna is supposed to be as strong as Hugo. Hugo was a bit of a fluke, but we'll see.
