I like to read the Charlotte Business Journal. One thing that has come up is the the fact that the political and business leaders of Charlotte are trying to mobilize this area as an energy hub. Given the recent bad news I figure I will post several threads talking about the future of Charlotte. Let's start with the energy field. How will Charlotte's energy hub sector industry look?
Waxhaw will only be one place. I believe that is where the Energy research park will be. However, much of the engine that will propel this will come from UNC Charlotte. Check this out.

This does not undermind the progress in Waxhaw, but will only help it in the future. This is really looking like more of a reality for the Charlotte economy and not just a bunch of political/economic development talk. Exciting news.
^I hope it happens. It would be exceptionally well for the diversification of our economy. Right now I am at UNCC, and they just broke ground for the EPIC center that will help jump start the energy hub. Also, more people should be informed about the CRI Center as UNCC. UNCC is more valueable to the Charlotte economy than what we think.
I work for a national engineering firm here in town. Our biggest focus area for work in 2010 is the energy sector. Duke is a big player in that. Right now, I think energy is about the best shot Charlotte has at growing another dominant industry, especially with the state of the banking world as it is. I think this is very real and very good for Charlotte.
I think that Charlotte agressively positioning itself as an energy hub will be more of a benefit in terms of its long-term future growth than continuing to tightcast itself as the "second largest banking center in the US" IMHO! Don't get me wrong, I aprreciate what the large banks have done for Charlotte over the last 20 years, it has transformed Charlotte from a small nothing happening town into a place that is attracting people from all over. Now, it's time to turn the corner and embrace the new energy economy, and it has to be more of a regional effort throughout the entire Charlotte CSA region (I say CSA region b/c places like Hickory needs to be involved as well b/c technically they are part of the Charlotte region).
^ I agree. Charlotte needs to embrace and run with this new energy sector. I also believe the UNifour region is key to this success. I see both metros eventually becoming one CSA in the future. The Unifour region nneds help economically. It would be cool if Charlotte and Hckory became like the Bay Area of energy.
