Looking at Barkingowl"s post #88 from WCNC one wonders why they did not close I77 several hours prior to that accident. One of the pictures looking North shows that road to be just packed snow and ice. In other parts of the country they will close major roads and allow the road crews to make it safe. From the picture it looks like 75% of the backed up vehicles were trucks. The rest stops would have been crowded but it would have been better than someone almost getting killed. However, I have not heard of any traffic fatalities because of the storm
That would take some proactive action from the NCDOT since they control the road, and here in DOT District 10, which is HQ'd in Albemaro, not Charlotte where most of the traffic is by far, they take little interest in the day to day activities on road conditions here.
Interestingly enough the governor felt it necessary to give a very long, no questions asked, statement on NC public TV today about the snow.
We ventured out too, mostly b/c I was crawling up the walls.
We went to Big Daddy's Burger Bar and it was completely packed with people, of course I suspect many people were ready to get their kids out of the house. I know we were.
The roads were ok but starting to ice up again. On our way home we saw a car that had ditched off of Providence Rd W. There were ambulances, firetrucks and such. I hope everyone was ok. Emergency personnel were gathered around the vehicle, but that is all I saw.
Yeah, Chicago, went out myself this afternoon. My neighbourhood is serviced by a road that is now under construction so it is closed. The "alternate" road is actually a series of back roads that were still pretty iced over due to hilly terrain and the tree canopy. Tomorrow will be fun. Since that is the only entrance to any number of subdivisions with literally thousands of residents/homes, I am at a loss as to why a city truck did not make it down those roads with some salt (at least). Firetrucks/ambulances would have some serious trouble on those roads. I can only hope/pray that nobody looses their life or their home due to these treacherous conditions.

Looks like we can keep this same thread going all week and it will still be valid for this weekend. Great
Did I hear something about snow tomorrow morning??
