Most of my friends crack jokes about NW IN and the entire state of Indiana. They say it's a redneck state, backwards, etc.

I guess they forget they live in Illinois, one of the worst run states in the entire country.

Are you so insecure that the responses of anonymous strangers on a declining website means this much to you? You seem to the be the main driver of all 16 pages of this thread.

Why is the public perception of NW Indiana so meaningful to you? Is it just because you grew up there or currently live there?

Using that same tribalism and "homeristic" (my neologism) logic, if you grew up or lived in IL would that suddenly become the coolest and most misunderstood place around. It seems that the only pertinent variable in your thought process are your feelings.

He should be in many ways happy that Chicagoans mostly have a dim view of NWI. If more start moving there then they will elect Democrats, and bring it closer to Chicago and Illinois politically. The Region can become the Blue Region, LOL!

It's clearly viewed as the redheaded stepchild. Doesn't mean I wouldn't consider living there if things get much worse on this side of the fence...

If things get much worse on this side of the fence I would move considerably further than NWI.

NW Indiana isn't bad but there's way more options for suburban living near Chicago. If BP Whiting ever hires me I'd probably move there without much complaining.
You'll care when your home becomes worthless from soaring property taxes. Its not just a little savings moving across the state line. Its easily $10,000+ a year and the gap grows each year as property taxes continue to soar across Illinois.
Drive around the South Suburbs sometime and see for yourself how this is playing out. Its a foreshadow into the future of Illinois. Homes in Harvey, Ford Heights, Calumet city are still experiencing declining home values and businesses are leaving/not being created in the community.

^ South Suburbs are not a good indicator. They are blighted due to "White Flight". Many areas of NWI are not in much better condition due to the same.

Things are very different in the West suburbs. They're even building new homes out here...

Not just new but custom new builds in many parts of the affluent BNSF corridor. These are anything but cookie cutter like many new residential developments throughout the country:
