Geneva stop on the UP West Line. Its within walking distance to that real sweet quaint downtown there.. if you want to see some very sweet christmas decorations now is the time. Its great to tour and have lots of shops and restaurnts there.

also the Arlington Heights stop on the UP northwest line is close to a wide range of downtown restaurants and shops. Check that one out too.

I suppose you could go one stop farther and get off on the Arlington Race Track stop .. they might be having something going on there too.

I'm more familiar with the south suburbs but Tinley Park's Oak Park Avenue stop is in downtown Tinley. It's the Rock Island line that runs from downtown to Joliet.

There is a little cluster of businesses there too. The more recent trend has been to back toward this kind of development as opposed to the "strip mall" growth that was in vogue, though the difficulty in Tinley Park (and other places that have been more car-centric is in getting the kinds of densities closer to the rail stations...

Also the train stations and parking matter. I think the walk from the glen Ellyn parking is a bear. Really far. Naperville parking permits are notoriously hard to get. Wheaton has a nice warm train station with a coffee stand and bathrooms in it. check out some of these things as well it make a difference if you are commuting.
