I'm single female, 30 something, no kids. I'm considering moving to Naperville because I've heard it's one of the nicest Chicago suburbs. Several of you on this forum told me there aren't many white collar, professional corporate jobs in Naperville. Is this true? Do you think Naperville would be painful as a single person? Where else should I consider?

Thanks for any input.

It really depends on your other needs. How long of a commute can you tolerate and what's your budget for rent, assuming you're renting?

Naperville is nice, pretty family oriented though, but among suburbs it may be better suited for singles than most others other than maybe Oak Park or Evanston. But it's difficult to say that "in a vacuum." It may depend if you know anyone in the area in general or whether you can make friends easily.

There are white collar jobs in Naperville and in other surrounding towns including Wheaton, Lisle, Downers Grove, Lombard and Oak Brook all along I-88. These are all within a 30 minute or less commute. I'm not sure where you read otherwise.

There is a big gap between actually being in Chicago and the suburbs for your situation as a 30 year old single person. In my opinion you may enjoy Chicago more unless you have no desire to be in the city.

Thank you for your comment. There are a few posters who have left Illinois due to the taxes who told me the commute to corporate gigs might be around an hour from Naperville. That sucks!

I should have stated in my original comment that I have no desire to live in the city of Chicago...not even one drop. The only reason IL is on my radar is for a medical procedure not available where I currently live.

If you're traveling to downtown Chicago, by train, it could take that long. It's about 35 minutes spent on the train, so I would suggest figuring out how long it takes to get to the train station from where you may live. You can get to many suburban corporate areas in under 30 minutes in DuPage County in the towns I mentioned previously.

There are closer in suburbs as well, but I have little ability to judge them from a "being single" standpoint other than the two I mentioned.

Uh, ok. I will never commute to the city of Chicago for anything. I will never accept a job in the city of Chicago. Nor do I have the desire to do anything in Chiraq. I would be working and living in the suburbs. I HAVE NO DESIRE TO LIVE IN THE CITY.

Fair enough. I understood after the first response that you didn't want to live in Chicago. My response was based on where it would take an hour to get from Naperville. That would probably just be downtown Chicago or Lake County. Maybe Rosemont and Schaumburg (suburbs) are about 45 minutes. There's certainly white collar employment much closer to Naperville. Whoever was previously providing you information was inaccurate. Hope that helps.

I think you may have a very biased view of Chicago. I understand not wanting to live in a city or the city, but really, as a single person, the burbs don't have the best scene for meeting young singles. Also, the reference to Chiraq is media hype. Only the gang areas are like what they portray in the media.

Thank you for your comment. I misunderstood why you were telling me that, but now I understand.

As someone from IL, you're right, I do have a biased view. I grew up in South Barrington and we used to frequent the city. My Dad grew up in the city. I'm also going by what family tells me who still live there. I've visited Chicago every couple of years since we moved out. It's not one of my favorite cities (sorry NYC is more impressive and has better food) and I still don't get Chicago loyalty or the hype and hate deep dish pizza. Second City isn't funny either. However, the Chicago burbs can serve a point for healthcare and possibly jobs - oh I do miss the midwest mentality! Even speaking to doctors and brokers in Chicago is leaps better than anyone I've spoken to in Los Angeles.

LOL.

Try The NeoFuturians if you dislike Second City.

I grew up near NYC and love it for visiting, but I would not want to live there given how crowded it is and how high rents and homes are for much less space than the Chicago burbs. I lived in Evanston for over 30 years and would be back there now (or in Boston where my other child lives), but my grandchildren are here and I help with them. At least the Chicago area has decent public transportation. Where I am now, you have to drive. I do have to admit, I don't miss the cold in the winter, but trading it for heat and humidity in the long summer here has not been fun at all.

I will check out NeoFuturians, thanks for the suggestion.

NYC is an impressive city to visit. I had THE BEST breakfast sandwich of my life there! Would never want to live in NYC though!!! Where do you live now? Boston is a great city! Evanston is on my list of places to visit. Just got off the phone with my cousin who suggested Evanston too.
