morothisu replies about how winter here is "not that bad" and "people from warmer climates move here and adjust all the time" in 5... 4... 3...

Compared to London, summers here are warm and winters are f#*king cold. As in, some days will never get above -10c, some nights will get down to -20c and beyond.

Child, you already missed it. The very first response to this thread described Chicago winters as "cool."

Yeah but he hasn't had a chance yet to tell those of us who claim Chicago winters are downright cold that we're wrong...

LOL.....sure. Here goes it...just kidding.

No, they're cold, but I think you misunderstand me. I mean that it usually isn't -20 F degrees every day like some people and the media portrays it as. As someone who didn't grow up in Chicago, I heard this type of thing constantly and was "disappointed" (not really) when I moved here to discover that the media outside of the area was full of **** and embellished it. But yes, it's still cold obviously, but for some people their opinions of the winter beforehand are even worse than it actually is due to the bull**** that they're fed (I am guilty of being fed this too). And the other point is that there are people who are immigrants from extremely warm climates that still manage to survive here.

There's a big difference between -20 F every day as some media thinks it is, and 20-30 F every day. And yes, compared to London, it's cold in the winter. Chicago is a good 15 F colder than London on average in the winter with more snow of course.

True. That'll be up by 8:00am tomorrow at the latest.

Edit because the above was written before I submitted my response: LOL... Perfect.

^^ I was here for the winter of 1977 ..my first winter in Chicago .. 'amazing' is one word I'd use to describe it . Thing is , I thought that it was a normal winter based on my preconceptions . As it turned out , it was sort of 'normal' for the winters of the late '70s and early 1980s . it still demonstrates what's possible here .

Where in the media does it say it is -20 everyday in the winter. I never heard of that. Maybe because I am originally from the Midwest. 20-30 everyday is pretty freakin cold and I grew up in this.

Nobody in the media has ever said it is -20 every day. It is hyperbole.

Regarding winters here, it changes from year to year but we always get our fair share of cold weather. It is just a matter of how cold it does get. I believe 5-6 years ago we had a run of bitter cold for a solid week where it was below zero every day. Luckily those spells have been far and few between over the last decade.

It was infact a hyperbole, but the media when I grew up made it sound like Chicago had THE worst winters of any city (major or minor) in the entire country. All the time. Even when I told people from Chicago that I was moving there, from Minnesota, they would act as if their winters were worse and I was "in for it."

Yes, Chicago winters are cold, but it could be worse is the point and sometimes it's exaggerated by some media into making you believe the weather is actually worse off than it is. I tried to get my ex girlfriend, who is from Hawaii, to move here. I met her while in college in Iowa. She basically said she couldn't handle the cold. Then I showed her weather data between Chicago and this city in Iowa we both lived in, which is roughly the same winter weather, but Chicago gets less snow. She was shocked because she'd been made to believe that Chicago was much, much worse by the media.
