Exactly. I even posted the statistics for it. So far, you are the first person who has paid any attention to what I was saying. New Orleans is much more murderous than Chicago. The murder rate isn't pretty in Chicago. However, Chicago has never recorded a murder rate of 80 murders per 100,000. New Orleans has done that, in 1993. Detroit has it bad too, much worse than Chicago. Last time I checked, Chicago doesn't have the level of decay that Detroit does. The amount of vacant land in Detroit is about the size of Boston,MA. The murder rate in Detroit is 3 times as high as Chicago.

There are other cities with murder rates higher than Chicago besides New Orleans and Detroit(and not necessarily in statistical order). St. Louis, Kansas City, Birmingham, Cincinnati, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Newark, Oakland, Little Rock, Miami, Richmond, Memphis, Stockton(CA), Cleveland, Baltimore, Baton Rouge. So far, no one seems to pay much attention to that. All the focus in on Chicago, and only Chicago

I think the thing too is that people only want to focus on gun-related deaths in re Chicago. Murder isn't always or only committed with a gun.

A couple of months back in Atlanta some young guys beat up a guy then shoved him into traffic to his death. And this wasn't gang-on-gang-black, black-on-black crime. The victim was a white guy who offered to give a girl a ride. I don't know if she was with the guys who beat him up and killed him. A similar incident happened after that.

While I understand innocent victims get killed in the crossfire, the murders in Chicago are gang-on-gang and in certain hoods. In Atlanta its random and even white yuppies get killed down here a lot, usually while being robbed.

i dont think its complete gentrification, i think its people in charge too, in by 2001 nyc was able to change with the help of giuliani, and there was still tons of natives, minorities , etc in nyc.. but now the gentrification in nyc is so bad , those that gentrified it in the first place can't afford it and they have to keep on moving and moving while millionaires take over

I would caution against making a judgment based simply upon what makes the news. The media loves sensationalism.

No need for sensationalism here---it's just as advertised...

I know. I just think the example of Chicago has been abused. There are a lot of people who enjoy reading these stories. Poor, black neighborhoods with all kinds of shootings. It's satisfying when something like this happens because it confirms their beliefs. "Yep, I knew it. Place is just a hellhole."

Agreed, although the Boston Globe is not in the habit of reporting on crime issues in Chicago. This story seemed particulary egregious since it involved a young child, and it happened late at night.

I almost think a better indicator would be when the media ignores it. That happens when it becomes commonplace. Let's hope it doesn't reach that level.

Sure, but isn't more relevant to compare Chicago to other global cities? I for one, see no point in comparing Chicago to Baton Rouge.

The fact is, Chicago's murder rate is higher than most (if not all) other peer/global cities in around the world.
