And comparing office districts is useless. You think the offices in Downtown Detroit have high crime? Of course not; there's nothing there. Downtown Detroit has no murders most years, and relatively little violent crime. Doesn't mean Detroit is safe.
Not when the actual thread is whether or not downtown Chicago is "safe anymore."

I gave you a link above to homicides on the Near North Side, and provided a commentary for someone like yourself who clearly doesn't know much about the city, and what the deal is. The actual downtown parts of the Near North Side and where many people live, the absolute densest parts with homicide in my example, are very low. Most of the homicides in NNS are near where projects were or where small ones still exist. The areas outside of these, very few.

The safest neighborhoods of Chicago are just as safe as the safest neighborhoods of NYC.

As for a "fraction" of the crime well.... Let's see what the data says.

City of Chicago and Manhattan....

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Ok, so violent crime per 1000 residents is 10.3 in Chicago and 7.9 in Manhattan. That's a fraction of a difference

What obviously skews Chicago's crime statistics is parts of the Southside and Westside....

Well the Loop has over 30,000 people living there and "Downtown Detroit" just over 5,000... so your downtown Detroit comparison is useless

I can compare many surrounding communities and you will see that they are quite safe, and as safe as places such as Gramercy, Chelsea, Tribeca.....

How about Near North Side? Over 80,000 people

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Near West Side has 55,000 people

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Near South Side 24,000... Looked like a very quite autumn....

Just describing the perps who did this.

There's no evidence of this. The safest neighborhoods in NYC are generally safer than the safest neighborhoods in Chicago. There are very urban neighborhoods with zero murders in NYC; while in Chicago the equivalent Lincoln Park/Lakeview neighborhoods do have murders.

And this is just a stupid defense mechanism. "Crime in the South Side and West Side doesn't matter because Lincoln Park has very few murders". Crime is crime, and for the purposes of measuring a city's relative crime rate, the city, as a whole, matters.

Everyone knows that crime is variable by location and that there are blocks in Detroit that are relatively safe and blocks in Evanston that are relatively unsafe, but you would have to be crazy to say Detroit is as safe as Evanston because if you pick Block A in Detroit it is as safe as Block B in Evanston.

But, to the thread title, yes, I think downtown Chicago is relatively safe, for an urban area, and I would not have worries.

The only homicides in downtown Chicago are an ocassional shooting at a River North nightclub at 3 in the morning and a couple a year in the remnants of Cabrini.

Very true. I touched on this earlier in the thread. Since Jan 1, 2007, there have been 23 homicides in the near north side. However, all but 6 of those were around Cabrini Green or in that area north of Division, east of Clybourn, and west of Sedgwick. Out of those 6:

* 2013 - 1. Murder-Suicide at the Sheraton in Streeterville. Autopsy: Man, woman in murder-suicide at downtown hotel - chicagotribune.com

* 2012 - 2. Guy gets a hotel room for a prostitute and then kills her. Woman killed at Gold Coast hotel had been busted for prostitution - Chicago Sun-Times

The other one was when a guy got into an argument with a group of people at 4am at a gas station and then got stabbed.

* 2011 - 1. Guy hires prostitute from Wisconsin and stabs her in a hotel room. Bail set at $1M in slaying of woman in Chicago hotel - Chicago Tribune

* 2010 - 1. Guy gets killed at a bar (can't find much about this)
* 2009 - 0
* 2008 - 1. Guy gets shot while driving his car. Probably a gang hit.

Out of those 6, 3 of them had to do with hotels. 2 of them had to do with prostitutes being killed, and one was a murder suicide. None of these are hardly anything that would make you think twice about the safety of an area. Only two of them were truly in public, with the last one probably being a gang hit (the stabbing one at the gas station could have been a gang one too).
