Lol i cant help but laugh at this post, closing schools because of the cold? I live in Sweden the school are opened even if it would mean riding a polar bear to school, and it wasnt even snowing right?

Chicago is a tad colder though, so living in Sweden doesn't matter much. It's my understanding that the schools closed due to frostbite concerns, not the visibility.

My kid's school was open today. The fire alarm went off and the kids had to go outside without any jackets! Luckily, they were only outside for less than 5 minutes, so the school had everything under control. It turned out just to be something that had set off the fire alarm.

I don't think they should've held school today though. If there was a real fire, nobody would be safe, inside or outside. Inside, obviously it wouldn't be safe because there would be a fire. Outside, it still wouldn't be safe because within 30 minutes, kids would get frostbite, maybe a bit of frostnip at just 10-15 minutes.

I saw that on the news. I can't imagine having to go out in that cold with out a coat, hat, gloves. Good thing they were able to get them back in quickly.

It's kind of sad that people keep blaming the kids and parents, saying they are "weak" because the School Admins decided to close school because of the cold. For one, it is dangerously cold outside, and the issues are potential problems with buses and public transit getting the kids to school, and having them wait outside or walk to school. Also, we live in a much more litigious society than before, so schools are playing it safe. If the schools did not close, and one kid got frostbite then you better believe there would be a law suit and people complaining that they did not close.

It has nothing to do with the kids or parents, the decision is solely up to the school admins

the ones who are really nuts are the women who dont want to get hat hair and in the 30 below zero windchill, they are out there looking stylish without a hat but freezing.

I have been back and forth between Minneapolis and Chicago this winter and I'm still surprised by all the people who have such inappropriate winter gear. No hat, a hoodie, with a thin jacket. I saw some suburban kids get off the bus the other day when it was -4, all around age 10 who were wearing sweat pants, sneakers, t-shirts with their jacket OPEN, no hats and no gloves. When I was that age I was in moon boots, snow pants, "choppers" and a bomber hat.

I can see teenagers being stupid about what they wear but am surprised when I see little kids in the wrong gear. Also adults, like at the bus stop there's always a handful of dudes freezing to death in their starter jackets. At that age who cares what you are wearing?

And therein lies the problem, perhaps?
