Last I checked Irish and Italians were always considered white by the census, could always own property, and always had the right to vote. Never mind the fact that most people cannot typically differentiate an Irish person from someone of Anglo stock if accents and surnames are not known (can't say that about a mestizo Latin American). The same could be said for many people of Italian or Ashkanazi Jewish decent.

Not to say that these people had didn't have obstacles to overcome back in the day, but saying that they were not considered white sounds like some sort of agenda to me. My neighbor growing up was an old guy from Naples who immigrated in the 1920's, and I don't remember anyone ever thinking he was anything but an old white guy with a funny accent.

Yes, I married one .

However, most Latinos in the US are Mestizo. My wife is not common in the US unless you're in south Florida.

Even so, last time I checked, the term 'mestizo' is even used much anymore- especially in Mexico. I don't believe they use it on their Census anyway.
