I take it you watched an episode of Gangland or whatever that TLC show is? If so, this is an excellent illustration of how absurdly sensationalistic that show can be.

I actually grew up on 71st and Jeffery what people consider to be the "hood", I am very educated, I have received my Master's Degree, and I find it unfortunate that so many people have been fooled into believing that crime and disparity in a neighborhood has anything to do with the color of someone’s skin. For some of you who may not know, years of history has led us to believe that we are actually different depending on our "race" imagine that, how foolish of some to still believe this. Social inequalities, limited access to education and employment, and institutional racism surly are more to blame than this silly social construction we call "race". So yes there are areas that have historically and recently suffered from an influx of poverty, high crime, drugs, and homicide, but for your own awareness, please don’t be so ignorant and absolutely gullible to believe that this only happens in “black” neighborhoods or that it will happen when large groups of “blacks” are together. They're many areas all over the world that suffer from these incidents (even neighborhoods where people of African decent do not reside!!!)

You just remember when you're walking through Lincoln Park in the middle of the night, that just because you are in an "affluent" area, crime still happens and believe it or not, people with white skin can mug you, rape you, and kill you!!! Imagine that!

For the record, I like my neighborhood. Yes it has its disadvantages, but it also has its advantages too, just like any neighborhood. Stop looking for the negative in others as a means to search for the positive within yourselves...
