My brother texted me yesterday and someone tried carjacking him near UIC yesterday . Said some guy with a chain tried getting into his car . He is a realtor and apparently there is a small exodus forming that is moving to the suburbs and away from the uncertainty with conflict in the city , especially with darth lord lightfoot in charge .

Thank you all --very helpful and what is UIC?

And jonny.... what is CPS? It's all helping me get a much clearer picture.

Getting the picture that employees, locals and tourists won't venture down to Rainbow Beach area.

Jimmyp25, I'm very sorry to hear that. It sounds like he's " about as OK as he can be".

Stay safe, Chicago. Where EVER you are. Always be safe, and prepared. NOT paranoid! But always ready!

99.9% chance they’d be fine.

It’s like with coronavirus. Everyone has to make their own decision.

Me, personally, if I had a teenager, I would not let them be hanging out at the lakefront right now.

Granted, I am getting older, too.

But I also think the scale and nature of the violence this year has blown away a lot of the fragile theories that people thought they could “understand” and “navigate” it somehow.

People are increasingly getting blown away at any kind of neighborhood gathering; children are being killed; and people are being randomly shot on the freeway. Shootings and homicides are way, way up. You don’t even hear about most of it.

More than that, though, you just increasingly see desolate areas all over with groups of aimless young people wandering around.

That is Chicago Speak for GTFO.

As I expressed in another thread, the cops were likely keeping all of this contained via a pressure cooker and now that they’ve taken their hands off the lever, it’s boiling over.

But to answer your original question, without much context, the idea of moving here from the burbs and letting your suburban teenagers wander around even the near South Side... it varies from neighborhood to neighborhood, but no. In most cases that is a very unorthodox decision.

There are neighborhoods and ways to do it, but it’s much more complicated than just saying, “Move to X spot.”

UIC is the University of Illinois at Chicago. It's on the west side, not the south side, so that doesn't really have any relevance to this question about the lakefront.

Generally speaking, there are very few tourist attractions south of McCormick Place... mainly just the Museum of Science and Industry, U of Chicago, and the White Sox stadium. Outside of that, there just isn't much reason to go further south if you're a tourist.

However, I truly believe the south side lakefront has tons of future potential for growth. Many of the nearby neighborhoods have been gentrifying, new developments are being built, and land is cheaper than up north. I was really rooting for the city to build the future casino on a site just south of McCormick Place (the former land where Michael Reece hospital once stood), but alas that fell through apparently. But there's still so much opportunity. I've also have always thought it would be cool to have a theme park built on the former U.S. Steel South Works site. Probably a pipe dream, but it would be amazing to have a city theme park along the lakefront, kind of like Cedar Point. It probably won't ever happen, but how cool would that be?

But to answer your original question, I would generally stay north of 67th street as of right now.

That's usually where you stop seeing white folks on the train. Though not unusual to see some down at 47th (going to Canaryville I presume).

nino jr, how are you?

I did take the Red line to 95th and back to the north side, just to go for a ride and see some of Chicago I don't normally get to see. And it is true, the racial make up very much changed once passing 35th street, going southbound. And I am not classifying it as good nor bad. I'm just stating my observation.

In my visits to Chicago, I did go outside of the norm and drive past 35th Street into Canaryville, just to check it out. Not much to that part of town, but that's what makes exploring fun.

ONE DAY I WILL take the drive to the very southern end of Chicago to explore (I have East Side, Hegewisch, Pullman and Beverly on my bucket list.)

Master Jay, I live in South Pullman on Arcade Row.
This area is called the Pullman National Monument! There's a lot of tourist that come through during the summer and fall months . My family moved here in 1962 . My parents were chased through the South side in the late 50's early 60's by black violence towards whites and were blockbusting. Mom and dad landed here and made their last stand. It's a mixed neighborhood that's in the twilight zone on this end of Chicago. Nothing happens here! We're in a little safety bubble! Leave here and you're in the ****.

Z'Dig, good morning to you!

SOMEwhere in one of my posts, I mentioned that I was chatting and having a wine with a real nice couple I me at Bruna's Italian Restaurant in the 24th and Oakley neighborhood. We got to talking about how I am a Milwaukeean but am always in different parts of Chicago. I mentioned that I have passed 35th street only several times in my travels. They happily invited me to check out their neighborhood of Pullman! They said it was a historical area and had some wonderful houses and I believe they mentioned a hotel (or bed and breakfast?)

And that is exactly why it went on my bucket list. They were very warm and friendly, and bought me a glass of wine!... and then I went across the street to Ignotzs, and a couple of people in their ended up buying me glasses of wine, too!... I must be be a real charmer!
