It's a hard question though, isn't it? Hotel Chateau is a flophouse, not any sort of human services facility. I don't see how its presence helps anyone.

L.A. has closed most of its SRO hotels on Skid Row. This is what it looks like there now.

That sucks, but I doubt it was rainbows and ponies before.

By the way, I want to make it clear that I advocate anyone forcibly shutting down SROs just because they're undesirable, but if someone wants to buy and renovate the property for some other use, why shouldn't they? I don't think places like Hotel Chateau provide any sort of inherent public service.

I'm familiar, very familiar with the "area" and the history/operaton of the "hotel" and I believe there's very little wrong with the area - other than the Chateau and some of its residents.

The ex-Alderman certainly contributed greately to the lack of positive development and orderly administration of the Ward, IMO. The Chateau has been an eyesore and public safety/health problem for years. Many businesspersons refuse to open nearby, same block, and of those who have been there some have moved out because of the Chateau residents. The ownership probably best fit the stereotypical image of slumlord ... justifiably.

Totally agree. Hopefully the Wilson Men's Hotel is next.
