No one said old houses don't exist in Atlanta. But they are definitely overshadowed by the, yes, tacky, gaudy, and overpriced castles you see in Buckhead. Us Midwesterners would rather live in a quaint Victorian, instead of a golden palace. Its just a matter of taste.
And in general there is a lot of 'old money' in the Cities, meaning older, grand 'mansions.'*
Point is: I'd rather live in St. Paul than in a 15 bedroom house in Atlanta.
* People have different views on what a mansion is.
You are WAY overgeneralizing. Buckhead is HARDLY dominated by "tacky, gaudy, and overpriced castles" as you claim.
And I am willing to venture that there is just as much - if not more - old money in Atlanta as there is in the Twin Cities.

Again, I never said that it is DOMINATED, just overshadowed. When you hear the name Buckhead, are nice little homes with a picket fence the first thing that come to mind?
Just for a quick comparison, there are 4 billionaires currently living in Georgia and 9 in Minnesota. Not surprisingly, they are all fairly old people

Says who? Certainly not reality:
Old mansions/houses

And some of the new stuff:

And this is just a small sampling of just what's available in Buckhead. I haven't even brought up Midtown, Ansley Park, Brookhaven, Decatur and Olmstead designed Druid Hills...plus a whole bunch of other neighborhoods in the city.
I'd really like to know where these ugly, tacky and gaudy houses are in Buckhead or any other upscale City of Atlanta neighborhood. It sounds just like mindless bashing to up the profile of your city (which is pointless IMHO)
Also, outside of the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, what other upscale places are there? Since this is State vs state thread, no only do we have the upscale neighborhoods of Atlanta but there is also Savannah, St. Simons and the rest of the Gold Coast and tons of examples in other cities/locales around the state.

No, nice little homes with a picket fence have NEVER defined Buckhead. Don't be ridiculous. Nor do they define the wealthiest areas of the Twin Cities.
As far as number of billionaires goes, do you really consider that to be a bragging right?

If you were living in Buckhead, yeah the Victorians would be overshadowed but go through the in-town residential neighborhoods and you'll see houses similar or close to what the other guy showed us.

If my tone comes off as bragging, excuse me. Just a simple fact I posted for the both of us to enjoy. If I wanted to brag I could have stated MN has twice as many billionaires as GA, and not posted facts.
As for the picket fences, yes, I was stereotyping what people think most often think of. You know, green lawn, white picket fence, maybe a little porch on the house. The quintessential American house... at least back in the day.
Man, I forgot about Savannah. I'm sure we'll hear some naive carping of Savannah but I would like to see some houses from that city. Does anyone have any pictures?

I have some on my other computer somewhere. Its a fun town to bum around in for the day or weekend. Nice homes there, too.

I'm going to stop right there as it would become embarrassing to compare Savannah to Minneapolis (or even Atlanta) as I could go on for pages with posts about it's housing stock. They've easily have one of the most well preserved and one oldest housing districts in the country if not continent. I would expect no less from one of the original colonial cities.
Good pictures Waronxmas. I think that slams the door on housing stock.
