In Oakland, CA we have a Sear's downtown. It was one of the "turning moments" in downtown development. They took over I think a Capwell's building? The image linked below is a good pic of the building. It's glam with marble flooring and columns.
Great architecture, since it is a classic department store building. There are several grand buildings in the surrounding area that will hopefully be repurposed. Downtown Oakland has been transforming from ghost town to actual city rapidly.
Downtown San Francisco has:
Macy's
Macy's Men's Store
Bloomingdale's
Nordstrom
Nieman Marcus
Saks Fifth Avenue
Saks Fifth Avenue Men's Store
Barney's New York
Wilkes Bashford(locals favorite)
All of these are among the largest and most profitable store locations in their respective companies.
There is also a Ross, Burlington Coat Factory, Target(coming soon), Marshall's. See, not just for rich people. LOL
This department store was 500,000 sq ft. It was one of the largest in the state. The Titche-Goettinger Dept. Store (Titche's) and was rebranded as Joske's in 1979. The store closed in 1987.
Downtown Denver manages to have every other store, except for a major Department store. TJMaxx is the only one I know of. I think there were more department stores in the past, however. Shopping isn't really lacking though, which is good.
I think that the upscale Cherry Creek Shopping area being only about 10-15 minutes away has something to do with the lack of department stores in downtown Denver.
No, Atlanta doesn't because malls are still too dominant here. The closest urban department store to downtown would be in Atlantic station across the bridge from Midtown.
Seattle's new City Target downtown is 3 storys and is more like a full line department store with mannequin's, and escalator's. Seattle still has the largest Nordstrom in the world and a Macy's downtown also. I Love having a midpriced option downtown.
There are still 4 large downtown dept. stores in my downtown, plus there are another 3 "general merchandisers" that are in the 100,000-200,000 square foot range.
